[SOLVED] Sound went missing after updating

Hi.. I'm a new Linux Mint LMDE user, just moved over from Ubuntu. Everything works fine on a fresh install of LMDE and after updating to UP8, I lose my sound. I've tried looking and doing some of the tutorials on this forums on how to get my sound back but to no avail. Partially maybe some of the tutorials are back in 2012 so they might not be applicable.

I have 2 sound outputs, one is a mobo (Asus P5Q-E) S/PDIF output to some speakers and a USB DAC/AMP (Ibasso D12) for my headphones.

Currently before updates, sound works when I'm choosing the following:

USB DAC/AMB - PCM2906B Audio Codec.

Mobo output - Built-in audio digital stereo -IEC958.

Is there any other information that I can give to help?

Everything works fine on a fresh install of LMDE and after updating to UP8, I lose my sound.

A fresh install (of LMDE 201403) does not need updating to UP8. What have you done? Installed a very old version and spent hours updating?
Note that LMDE is no longer a semi-rolling release, so you might reconsider your choice of LMDE.

I downloaded LMDE from here - http://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php

I'm not exactly sure why I said I updated to UP8, I must've have been mistaken or I saw some reference to UP8 and thought it was UP8. The first time I login, there are some updates about 83Mb in total. After that update, sound goes missing. So if anyone could link me some articles on how to detect the issue with possible fixes that would be great.

This is hella strange. After a reinstall today and a small 80mb update, sound is working. It didn't work the last 5 times.. I'm not doing anything differently.

Ok.. this is weird as hell. These are the steps to reproduce, all are on fresh installs.

1. Updated. Sound worked. Installed Chrome stable, sound stopped working. I thought it was something to do with Chrome but then..

2. Updated. Sound stopped working even before I installed Chrome.

Ok, I got it to work.

I ran alsamixer and increased the volume for S/PIF and sound came back. Why did it turn off in the first place?
