nvidia driver: video codecs problem

I was running up to date LXDE with free nvidia driver and all video codecs appeared to work (with gmplayer or Movie Player).

Since installing the non-free nvidia driver, some movies will play but wmv will not.

Running mplayer from a terminal gives me:

ASF file format detected.
[asfheader] Audio stream found, -aid 1
[asfheader] Video stream found, -vid 2
VIDEO: [WMV3] 720x540 24bpp 1000.000 fps 1980.0 kbps (241.7 kbyte/s)
-------
snip

==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [dmo] DMO video codecs
DMO dll supports VO Optimizations 0 1
DMO dll might use previous sample when requested

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: init_video_codec

MPlayer interrupted by signal 4 in module: init_video_codec
-------------------------------------------------

Any ideas? or can you point me to a guide to reverting to the free nvidia driver?

TIA

Apologies!!
Posted in wrong forum; I misread LXDE as LMDE.

* Moved to the LMDE forum
FYI, you can report a thread if you would like a mod to move it, just give a little detail explaining.

I think that file is encoded using 10bit, if my hunch is correct use Mplayer2 and see if the file works. Its a wild guess but its better than nothing.
