Hi!

I) This assistance describes how to install Mint Debian on an USB flash drive - only to use on one computer (you used to install),
because a grub.cfg is generated with the operating systems installed on your hard disk.

Note:
There are 2 other possibilities:
II) Installing a Live USB
the best way: PartedMagic/ UNetbootin
III) Installing a persistent USB
e.g. after having booted Julia: Menu > System > Administration > Startup Disk Creator


PART 1 of 6

1. You can use this guide for installation onto your hard disk, replacing target sdc1 (-> partition sdaX of hd) and boot loader device sdc (installation into MBR of first hd: sda, not sda1).

Devices:
sda hard disk
sdb USB flash drive with live LMDE 201012 (created with PartedMagic/ UNetbootin)
sdc USB flash drive 2: destination to install the new Mint Debian


0. With GParted I prepared an USB flash drive [sdc]: Format [ext4], label [LMDE] and flag [boot]

1. Boot from new live Mint Debian
2. Start the installer
3. Choose language, timezone and keyboard layout (Model + layout!)

PART 2

The installer is scanning the disks.
4. First you have to choose the partition for your Mint 201012 5. Double click and edit
! Do not choose "Edit partitions"!

"Edit partitions" causes the start of GParted.

PART 3

Editing: 6. "Mount as:" choose "/" (root)
7. You have to choose format [e.g. ext4] the root(/) partition before proceeding!
But partition will not yet be formatted!

PART 4

9. Select a username, password and hostname

10. You can install the boot loader: /dev/sda is default
In my case (install on flash) I had to select /dev/sdc But if necessary it is possible to unselect "Install GRUB"

PART 5

Depending on your choice you see in a review: or Afterwards you can quit or install.

ii) Some notes on the first update:
One of the packages is grub-pc After a while you are asked: After having agreed you again have to choose a bootloader device: ! In my case (only one USB stick plugged in), it has of course changed: sdc -> sdb!

No, you don't have to uninstall Windows to make Linux work.
