No ttys (Ctrl+F keys) and no GDM on X restart

Post by terdon »

Hi all,
after installing update pack 4, I can no longer fall to a tty (command line) using Ctrl+Alt+F keys. Same behavior if I try at the gdm login screen or under ANY window manager (have tried gnome-fallback, mate, cinnamon, gnome3 and xfce).

In a different, but I think related problem, restarting the X server does not restart GDM. So, if I logout, or hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or simply if X crashes, as happens very often on my laptop under any gnome3 based setup (gnome3, mate, cinnamon and even gnome-fallback) I get a black screen, no login window. Since I cannot use the ttys because of the first problem I mentioned, I am left with no choice but to do a hard reset.

My laptop is a Dell Precision M4500 with dual monitors running on an NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M, driver 3.3.0 NVIDIA 295.40

I get the same problem when using only the laptop's monitor and previous versions of the nvidia driver or the fglrx driver.

Any ideas?

Re: No ttys (Ctrl+F keys) and no GDM on X restart

Post by äxl »

Look if you don't have Ctrl+Alt+F set as another shortcut and that your keyboard settings are correct.
Is any of this helping: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key
And couldn't you just use nouveau, nv or vesa for a try?

Re: No ttys (Ctrl+F keys) and no GDM on X restart

Post by terdon »

Hi, thanks for the suggestions. I'll try nouveau just, as you say, in case but I doubt it will make a difference. In any case, I need it to work with the nvidia version :) I know it used to before the update pack so I see no reason why it wouldn't now.

As for the Magic SysRq key, thanks but since I am dropped to a black screen with no prompt, I guess the command is recognised ok.

Any more ideas?
