Just installed Linux Mint Debian 201204 64-bit to my Toshiba Satellite
L745 notebook 640GB, Intel Core i5-2430M processor, 6GB RAM. The
computer is wired to a Linksys router. Prior installing, the disk was checked
for checksum and file integrity.
The consequent updating/upgrading produced the following error:

Overall the OS is working extremely well, Browsing in Firefox is speedy
and can send/receive e-mail messages in Thunderbird (both are still
version 11.0).
Setting up Newsgroup accounts in Thunderbird is straightforward (I have
done this many times before using different operating systems) but am
unable to download any Group Lists because:
"Thunderbird failed to connect to server news.aioe.org". I tried other
news servers... same error message(s).
Thunderbird connects to the Internet using "systems proxy settings".
I wonder if the Update and Thunderbird error messages are somehow
connected and would be most grateful receiving assistance rectifying this
situation.
Please note: I inserted a liveDVD of Linux Mint 13 (Maya) to the same
notebook and was able using the Newsgroup service in Thunderbird (v12)
without any problems).
TIA.
