Nvidia and display manager issues with LMDE Cinnamon

The last upgrade crashed my LMDE. The upgrade caused the menu to appear and function but fail to actually launch any programs. The display panel lost the wording for it's menus and replaced it with small hollow rectangles. The Cinnamon desktop in either 32 or 64 bit versions LMDE iso also crashes. I tried installing the other desktops and they work but there is no display manager with either of them. I use an Nvidia card and two monitors. Loading Nvidia X configuration manager presents the problem that the programs issues and error on trying to save the config file saying that it does not have permission to write the xconf file. Saving the results into another directory and them copying them using Root causes the xconf file to lose integrity and X crashes on boot and freezes the system.

I like the display manager in Gnome in LMDE 1. What options do I have for continuing to use LMDE with two monitors?

Thanks
