In testing the incoming updates on my system (UP 5), I ran into some problems. I used Synaptic to update all the packages that I could without having to remove significant conflicting packages. Now I've got about 60 packages left to upgrade that conflict with each other in various ways. Updating Cinnamon will force the removal of cheese, empathy, and other things including a handful of gnome-[foo] packages. Updating cheese will force the removal of Cinnamon and a similar set of packages.
Also, in my state of partial upgrade, something has gone rather wrong with the the display of many applications: white text on light grey background. Affected programs include Shotwell (upgraded), Rhythmbox (not upgraded, because it wants to remove rhythmbox-plugins and some libraries that seem possibly important), and Synaptic (in the Repositories box, but not the main window). Also, Nautilus won't start.
How do I go about troubleshooting this?
