UP 5: cinnamon, cheese, empathy, and others in conflict
Posted: Wed Aug 01, 2012 8:51 pm

In testing the incoming updates on my system (UP 5), I ran into some problems. I used Synaptic to update all the packages that I could without having to remove significant conflicting packages. Now I've got about 60 packages left to upgrade that conflict with each other in various ways. Updating Cinnamon will force the removal of cheese, empathy, and other things including a handful of gnome-[foo] packages. Updating cheese will force the removal of Cinnamon and a similar set of packages.
Also, in my state of partial upgrade, something has gone rather wrong with the the display of many applications: white text on light grey background. Affected programs include Shotwell (upgraded), Rhythmbox (not upgraded, because it wants to remove rhythmbox-plugins and some libraries that seem possibly important), and Synaptic (in the Repositories box, but not the main window). Also, Nautilus won't start.
How do I go about troubleshooting this?

Tks for opening the topic
can you provide, please the info i asked in the UP5 feedback topic
could start providing some useful info as:
- upgrade method used;
- if available, any error in the last upgrade; otherwise provide the output of apt dist-upgrade;
- output of inxi -Sr
- output of cat /etc/apt/preferences
this will help us troubleshooting the issues, but i already can see a tip of the problems:
I used Synaptic to update all the packages that I could without having to remove significant conflicting packages.
i believe i won't be able to do that, releases like lmde have to be managed with dist-upgrade command and packages have to go and come (it's part of the nature of the beast)
in my state of partial upgrade, something has gone rather wrong
probably one thing is cause-effect of the other.
i just hope that there's not a major harm done and a simple dist-upgrade can heal that but probably packages were removed that shouldn't and others were installed and or kept back that should be gone long ago.

Sorry, meant to include this in the first post, and then got sidetracked after I went ahead with apt dist-upgrade. Thanks much for your advice, zerozero!

Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
That's actually a much more reasonable set of removals than anything I saw going piecemeal with Synaptic, so I went ahead with the apt upgrade. I guess it's a case where you can't upgrade some without the others. It went forward with no apparent upgrade problems.
Now the only problem I notice is display / theme / font color issue described above. See the attached screenshot. (It's a whole desktop view of two asymmetric monitors, so that's why there's the black bar at the top on the left side.) This is with Cinnamon, but the same thing happens in GNOME.

the removals you have there are very similar to the ones i got
Code: Select all
The following packages will be REMOVED:
gir1.2-sushi-1.0 gnome-netstatus-applet gnome-sushi-common

libpanel-applet2-0 librpm2 librpmbuild2 librpmsign0 libsushi-1.0-0
libupnp3 python-farsight python-gnomeapplet python-papyon xz-lzma
i only got one kept back
Code: Select all
The following packages have been kept back:
python-pyatspi2
that actually (as i detailed in the UP5 topic) can be updated after
my final output looked like this
Code: Select all
1327 upgraded, 150 newly installed, 36 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
we have to let some things go
- regarding that theming issue, i'm unsure but is that mint-x theme, right? happens the same with adwaita (the default gnome3 theme?)
- and the metacity (window deco) are they missing or is it the screenshot?

ragesoss,
just a quick [edit] to report that squeezy in the UP5 topic has report exactly the same issue with the theme (it's something that i easily miss because i always use tweaked themes
)

Yep, same issue I have with Mint-X theme. The window decoration is black. You can't see the window title but you can see a gray X to close it.

Yep. I got a more usable theme by going to Cinnamon Settings -> Themes -> Other settings, and changing GTK+ theme to avoid the Mint-X family. Only that setting seems to be a problem; Mint-X works fine in the other available settings.

the version of mint-x-theme in lmde was build for gtk3.2
http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mint-x-theme/ (last commit is from april)
in maya's repo (tho the deb has the same version number) is build for gtk3.4
http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/mint-x-icons/ (commit from may)

That's right, and I know about it... err, wait, but that means it's not updated yet to be ready for what comes with UP5
Also it may mean that not many people use this theme
as I see, only two complaints so far, the others didn't say anything about this issue in the feedback thread.

Well, my
only problem with UP5 so far is related to theme.
"Had to change the GTK+ theme to Adwaita from Mint-X" too.

Bit of a bump, but +1
Assuming Mint-X is the default (I tend to run at default themes, as they look the nice, and are minimum effort lol), it needs updating/fixing before this UP goes to latest.
Also, apologies for 'spamming' the feedback thread, I didn't realise this section existed (well, I wasn't sure what posts were supposed to go where), too many subforums! lol
