After having no sound problems for a while,
the recent Mint updates brought them back.
A few minutes into a flash video or talking
on Skype the speakers go mute.
The headphones still work.

I also noted, that firefox is (now?) using an ALSA plug-in.
In case anyone has a solution, it is highly appreciated.

Update: For whatever reason, re-installing the three gnome-settings-* packages brought sound back.
