I am also having this white font issue. I am on Cinnamon and I did a partial upgrade , but the fonts in the menu of LibreOffice and first column/line numbers in gvim are all gone.

I updated all the gtk2 files, still doesnt help. Is this the same issue ? What to do ?

What's wrong with updating only the stuff thats bugging you ? Is there no shorter way to resolving this than updating all my 1k packages ?
PS: I did the symbolic links thing but it didnt help.

What is wrong with the partial upgrade is that it may lead to all kinds of weird errors no one here has ever seen - even those brave men who track Testing or Unstable repos. LMDE is based on Debian Testing, after all.
Please read this thread for more info:

LMDE FAQ contains some explanations about various Debian releases and repos.

Fixed finally. Updating all the Xorg,X11 and Gnome related packages did the trick.
