dasdas wrote:Hi guys, finally got some issues tracking testing :)
So after the last update if I try to start any session from MDM (either Cinnamon, Cinnamon 2D, Classic Gnome) I only get a black screen with a mouse pointer which works.
If I switch to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), log in and run startx, Cinnamon starts just fine. I have looked in in /var/log/syslog and no errors there.

In ~/.xsession-errors I get this but I can't figure it out:

If anyone has some ideas/advice, I'm all ears.
After reading your post, and having done the updates, but not rebooted yet, I went in and installed lightdm.
Once installed, I told Linux I wanted lightdm as default.
I rebooted, holding my breath and lightdm started up.
Logged in, and was off to the races in Mate.
This is a possible work-around for mdm.

Sorry if this is covered somewhere, but my 64 bit LMDE Mate (tracking Testing of course), is also downloading 32 bit package lists as well and consequently taking a while on my slow Mobile internet.

Why?

Multiarch packages are now needed in LMDE.
Once they download and install, then the only required downloads should be for updated packages.
Have patience. It will work out.

Thanks Transitman, indeed using lightdm fixes the problem and cinnamon starts fine.

Hey 'z'... :)

LMDE/Gnome Shell/Debian Testing
Those Updates went through yesterday with no issues?

Code: Select all

gene@lmde-cin ~ $
python-gi-cairo:
  Installed: 3.8.2-1
  Candidate: 3.8.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.8.2-1 0
        700 http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ testing/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
python-gobject:
  Installed: 3.8.2-1
  Candidate: 3.8.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.8.2-1 0
        700 http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ testing/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
python-gi:
  Installed: 3.8.2-1

        700 http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ testing/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I am running a straight gnome-shell

Code: Select all

gene@lmde-cin ~ $ apt policy gnome-shell
gnome-shell:
  Installed: 3.4.2-7+b1
  Candidate: 3.4.2-7+b1

I tracked Testing (jessie) yesterday and I encountered the following problems

1. after login with mdm, only black screen with a mouse pointer shown (as described by the others)
2. no more "login window" preference in control center
3. device driver manager no longer shows (LMDE recommended) intel graphic driver
4. device driver manager now shows driver for my ATI/AMDI HD 8730M (installation went ok, didn't work after the reboot)

Found the workaround for no. 1 but couldn't found the solution for other problems yet.

LMDE 201303 64bit MATE edition.

it probably has something to do with the python transition that's occuring right now

For a login workaround, install lightdm, make it default and you'll be able to login without issue.

For anyone experiencing the MDM issue: I simply reinstalled MDM, rebooted and it worked again. Logged out and back in again and that worked as well. "Login Window" works as well. This on LMDE 201304 Mate. :D

if you take a look into these packages, they're part of gnome 3.8. on other hand, mate, which is a fork of gnome2 mostly won't affected by the python transition since they didn't need those packages. this transitiion issue only affected on cinnamon.

Since updates of a week ago I have a problem with sound. It won't play 2 streams, say from clementine and a youtube video (Xfce). The sound of VLC has distortion (had that problem a year ago too, fixed it but now it is back. I forgot the fix...). I pointed the sources at mint again for now, I'm not going ahead with testing for a while.

If you want the new mdm that comes with the main edition (html5 mdm), you can get the libc6 2.17 (needed for it to run) in jessie or sid, and the mdm deb here: http://build.linuxmint.com/automate/www ... ain/m/mdm/

I have it running on two lmde systems with no headaches.

MDM for LMDE (64bit & 32bit)

Code: Select all

http://build.linuxmint.com/automate/www/instances/linuxmint/debian/pool/main/m/mdm/mdm_1.2.4+lmde_amd64.deb

http://build.linuxmint.com/automate/www/instances/linuxmint/debian/pool/main/m/mdm/mdm_1.2.4+lmde_i386.deb
I think Ubuntu one is different from Debian one.

didn't even know that one was there, I went by the link on the blog, thanks for this :D
Although I have the ubuntu one installed with no issues, I'll switch over once the 1.25 arrives in it.

Thanks everyone, got testing working fully by upgrading mdm. Tiny issue though, is anyone that is running Cinnamon 1.8.2 having any issues with their wallpaper not showing up in the workspace viewer? All of the backgrounds are black and it's not very pleasant to look at.

Nope mine works fine as shown, I also have the new mdm and cinnamon 1.8.2 running.

Don't know what would cause that maybe someone here should know hopefully.

Found solution here: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/696
Open up gnome-session-properties, and look for the entry that says "Files - Start Nemo desktop at login". Choose to edit, and replace "nemo -n" with "gsettings set org.nemo.desktop background-fade false && nemo -n". This should ensure that the setting is always set correctly before nemo starts.

this is not a breakage per-se (at least not yet :? )
- as you all know (if following this topic closely) gnome 3.8 is coming to testing (not tomorrow but soon)
- when that happens, and if the present version of cinnamon is not updated to gain gnome 3.8 compatibility, cinnamon will break.
- it's probably a good idea to install a light DE ot WM alongside cinnamon for the "rainy days"
