I moved an old Fujitsu Lifebook from Ubuntu Lucid to LMDE-Mate. After a big update a couple of weeks ago that included a lot of Mate-related packages, the laptop got really flaky. Sometimes it wouldn't suspend, sometimes it wouldn't come back from suspend, sometimes it wouldn't start X windows on boot, sometimes it would lose the wireless, sometimes it wouldn't even connect on ethernet. The problem seemed to be getting worse.
A perusal of /var/log/syslog showed that it was looking for wicd-related python scripts and not finding them. Very strange, because wicd isn't even installed.
When I looked in startup services, wicd was checked to start automatically on boot up! I certainly didn't do that at any point, and I can only assume it happened somehow during the update.
I turned it off plus other stuff I never use, like Evolution alarms. Ever since, the little old laptop has been running fine.
If this is a problem others have had after the recent updates, then maybe an error has been introduced in the update scripts?
