SOLVED Black screen after UP8 for LMDE-mate-64bit

Postby jakke5 on Sat Mar 01, 2014 1:16 pm

After I went through the update from 7 to 8, I noticed that the terminal had become 'dead', i.e. it no longer did anything.
After reboot I got a choice for Cinnamon or Cinnamon2 if I remember well, but no MATE any more. I choose Cinnamon and the screen went black, except for the mouse-pointer that remains active.
I wonder what to do in order to get back to my favourite MATE-desktop.
Reinstall is out of the question, I would loose too many settings.

Switch to the system console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in as root and run:

Code: Select all
apt update
Code: Select all
apt dist-upgrade
Code: Select all
apt install mint-meta-debian-mate

Thanks.
I tried
Code: Select all
apt update
and got this answer:
root@name-of-my-computer: ~#
Command 'apt' is available in '/usr/local/bin/apt'
The command could not be located because 'usr/local/bin' is not included in the PATH environment variable.

And now what?

Use the full path:

Code: Select all
/usr/local/bin/apt update

Or save yourself some typing and add /usr/local/bin to your PATH:

Code: Select all
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin

then you can use:

Code: Select all
apt update

Thanks.
The export-command did what it was supposed to do.
Unfortunately I met a lot of other problems.
1. After
Code: Select all
apt update
(and the same later on with apt-get update) the terminal answered:
Err http://mirror.hro.nl stable InRelease
Err http://packages.linuxmint.com debian InRelease
could not resolve 'mirror.hro.nl'
could not resolve 'packages.linuxmint etc
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/debian/InRelease

+ other warnings Failed to fetch, last W being :
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored or old ...
2. I tried
Code: Select all
apt dist-upgrade
with the same result
At the end the terminal suggested: try
Code: Select all
--fix-missing
but the terminal said: command not found.
3. after
Code: Select all
apt install mint-meta-debian-mate

the final result was that a number of software-items were removed (concerning cinnamon and others) and:
Some packages could not be installed followed by a list of
Depends: subclient, mintstick,xchat,xdg-user-dirs-gtk, caja, mate-panel, mate-session-manager, mate-settings-daemon-pulse, mate-terminal, mate-media, mate-media-pulse
Finally a E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages

I hope somebody can help me.

Your network seems to be broken, so it doesn't make any sense to continue launching apt, you need to fix the network first.
Check the network manager status:
Code: Select all
service network-manager status

Thanx a lot
Networkmanager started.
After PATH set to /user/local/bin and
Code: Select all
apt update

I get the same errors:
Err http://mirror.hro.nl stable InRelease
Err http://mirror.hro.nl stable Release.gpg
Err http://packages.linuxmint.com debian InRelease
etc.
Failed to fetch all the above

I wonder if it possible to copy the answers of the terminal to a file in order not to have to write ihem down manually, and further on post them in this forum? (with another linuxOS on the same computer)

Try also
Code: Select all
service networking start

What are your network settings? Is it wired or wireless network? Do you use DHCP?

For this machine I use a wired connection to the internet. It is working well, since I am able to write this through it.
I did
Code: Select all
service networking start

and became
[ OK ] Configuring network interfaces ... done
then I ran
Code: Select all
service network-manager status

and to my surprise the answer is
NetworkManager is not running ... failed
??????

That already sounds good. You can try to restart network-manager:
Code: Select all
service network-manager restart

No change.
After
Code: Select all
service network-manager restart

the terminal answers
[ OK ] Stopping network connection manager : NetworkManager already stopped
[ OK ] Starting network connections manager : NetworkManager
but after verifying status it returned FAILED

You'll probably have to try to set the network interface up manually... So do you use DHCP for it? Or is IP address and other stuff set explicitly in the network settings?

I found DHCP for IPv4 in Ubuntu, the system I'm using right now.. I'm not sure it's the same system for LMDE, but I don't remember I ever set up the IP-adress explictly.

Okay, then simply run
Code: Select all
dhclient
after starting the "networking" service and the network should be up.

Many thanx again.
I doubted if dhclient would work after starting the networking service, since the terminal always returns FAILED on asking the status of the networkservice, but I gave it a try.
Without success.

Well... I'm out of ideas. You can try another method - use chroot from LiveDVD (skip the last items, they're for reinstalling grub) and then
Code: Select all
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install mint-meta-debian-mate
from there.

Thanks again.
You suggest to use chroot (and to skip the last items ???)
How should I do that? I just read the doc is coreutils.info but I don't know
which OPTION, to which NEWROOT and which COMMAND to use.
I suppose NEWROOT will be the rootdirectory of LMDE on (one of the partitions of) my harddisk but how can I specify it? I understand from coreutils.info that NEWROOT must be a directory, and I fear it must be a subdir of / (i.e. of the live-usb)
and COMMAND will be apt-get update etc.

I think I got in. I mounted the partition and looked for its properties.
Since setting the PATH to /usr/sbin no succeeded, I used the command
Code: Select all
/usr/sbin/chroot /media/mint/UUID of the partition

And finally
Code: Select all
apt-get update

I got a few errors like Err http://mirror.hro.nl stable/main Sources
Could not open file /dev/null - open (13: Permission denied)

but also a lot of Ign for instance Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/backport amd64 Packages/DiffIndex
and finally the terminal says
100% [Working]

Didn't I give you the link to the tutorial on how to perform chroot? :?
