Boot stops after LMDE upgrade
Hi everybody,
I'm new to Linux. I decided to give it a try and installed LMDE 201303 on my HP DV 5000 laptop.
Everything was stable, and I love linux mint.
I recently upgraded the software via the icon on the desktop, after the upgrade process it told me that I have broken packages.
I rebooted , the new screen i have is
Linuxmint ...... linux 3.11-2-486
Linuxmint ...... linux 3.11-2-486 recovery mode
Linuxmint ...... linux 3.2.0-4-486
Linuxmint ...... linux 3.2.0-4-486 recovery mode
I select the 1st one, it booted and I had many errors of this :
[ 12.543288] udevd[2958]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory
[ 12.548789] udevd[2962]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory
There was a warning :
Startpar: Service(s) returned failure: plymouth ... failed
and nothing else after it, the system just stops
After some research , I used the recovery mode and
I removed hal,
I removed broken packages
Rebooted
i had no more errors but i still have
Startpar: Service(s) returned failure: plymouth ... failed
and the system stays there,
When I use ctrl + alt + suppr it reboots.
When I try the linux 3.2.0-4, it stops right during the boot process.
What is the problem?
can it be nvidia drivers, I checked and it says that I have the latest versio...
Thank you for your help

Re: Boot stops after LMDE upgrade
Maybe MDM is not loading for some reason. Try reinstalling it:
Code: Select all
apt install --reinstall mdm mint-mdm-themes
Re: Boot stops after LMDE upgrade
Hi,
Just tried it, reinstall was successful, I choose mdm when it asked, but still the same result with more details:
a shell type screen that says :
Failed to start the X server. it is likely that it is not set up correctly. would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem
Also as it is the 1 st start after the update, it says that the kernel is compiling, at every reboot...

please consult the X.Org foundation support
please also check the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Re: Boot stops after LMDE upgrade
I ran nvidia-detect:
geforce 7150 M
your card is only supported up to the 304 lergacy drivers series
it is recommended to install the nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver
??

Re: Boot stops after LMDE upgrade
Ah, so there it is. Your installed NVidia driver has been upgraded to 319.xx and this series doesn't support your old card. You should indeed follow the advice and install the legacy drivers.darkvador80 wrote:your card is only supported up to the 304 lergacy drivers series

Re: Boot stops after LMDE upgrade
It already told you the name of the metapackage, nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver.
Re: Boot stops after LMDE upgrade
Ok, I see
well, I don't understand how to install this package,
also, do I need to remove the actual driver ??

Yes, the first two posts in that thread contain the instructions.
