<solved> update manager or synaptic causing issues?

Post by ejames82 »

I have an icon on the taskbar. I am guessing it is either synaptic or update manager. it is shaped like a shield. occasionally it will have a blue 'i', but most of the time it has a red 'x'. when I hover over it with the cursor, it says 'could not refresh the list of packages'

when I try to click on it, two windows pop up. one of them is a window titled synaptic pops up (as superuser) and says:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/w ... ce/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/w ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

the second one looks like the synaptic package manager, but instead says 'update manager (as superuser)' in the title bar. it had three packages listed showing the old version and the new version. I clicked 'install updates' and a progress bar appeared as it downloaded and installed the recommended programs. it said 'successful' when finished. however it still has a red 'x' in it.

I have used

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
several times now. could doing so have messed up the program associated with this icon?
I would like to use this icon to do updates, if that is the icons purpose.
it seems to be working ok at what it does. I just want to be sure it's working as it's designed to.

there must be many others that are experiencing the same thing, so to put info on the forum would be beneficial to me and others.

anybody have some advice, insight, or suggestions about this? it would be most appreciated.

The answer is already in your posting: the ppas obviously don't exist anymore or the server was down.
The former means you will have to delete them from your sources. The latter means you can try again later. ppas shouldn't be used with LMDE as LMDE is not based on Ubuntu. Better delete them from your sources, you risk damaging your system with a ppa.

apt-get update only updates the packages lists, nothing else. It wil not mess up mintupdate (the program associated with this icon), but doesn't help either as mintupdate starts with checking the package lists anyway.

hello py-thon,

this is what I did:

Code: Select all

sudo su
cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
vi nilarimogard-webupd8-testing.list
I pushed
i
to insert
changed this:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/webupd8/ubuntu testing main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/webupd8/ubuntu testing main

to this:

#deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/webupd8/ubuntu testing main
#deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/webupd8/ubuntu testing main

then pushed
:wq
to save and exit

do you think this will work ok?
what would you have done?
thanks again

Hello, ejames82.

Sorry to interfere. But, you posted this in the LMDE subforum, Linux Mint Debian Edition. Yet, your sources list file illustrates that you were using a Ubuntu related PPA, which you have now disabled. LMDE and PPAs do not go together well.
Or should we assume you are not using LMDE, but a Ubuntu based version of Linux Mint?
Could you be bothered to post the output of the command

Code: Select all

inxi -Sx
please. This will clear up the question beyond doubt.

After having disabled the problematic PPA, please, right-click on the shield icon and select [Refresh]. This should reveal pretty quickly whether your problem has been solved. Instead of clicking on the icon you might also run the commandline

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
Same effect.

Cheers,
Karl

hello Karl,

I would be glad to cooperate while you help me :)

Code: Select all

ed@edmint ~ $ inxi -Sx
System: Host: edmint Kernel: 3.11-2-486 i686 (32 bit, gcc: 4.8.1) Desktop: MATE 1.6.1 Distro: LinuxMint 1 debian
ed@edmint ~ $
I believe the problem has been solved permanently by commenting out those ppa's on the sources.list with vi
it turned the red 'x' into a green check mark.
now I put the cursor over the shield icon and it says 'your system is up to date'
when I right click and refresh as you suggest, the check mark disappears for a few seconds, then reappears.

here is when I update (to verify that all is well):

Code: Select all

ed@edmint ~ $ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for ed:

funny thing is, I don't know how I got that ppa that was causing the issue.
I'm glad I know how to edit now with vi
this thread is definitely solved.
thanks for the reply :)

Hello, ejames82.

Thanks for posting the screen output generated by "inxi -Sx" and "sudo apt-get update".
"inxi -Sx" confirms that you are indeed on LMDE.
"apt-get update" confirms that your little problem has been solved.
Great.

Have a nice weekend,
Karl
