how does mintupdate work on LMDE

how does mintupdate work on LMDE

This is confusing me, the mintupdate shield has a tick on it but then I click on it anyway and then it says there are 50 updates, so how does that work?

Update Manager doesnt work for me...keeps saying I have broken packages but Package Manager doesnt report that.
I ignore Update Manager and run the updates via terminal: sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get upgrade
