Upgrading

Hi, couldn't find anything conclusive about my question, so I thought I'd try to post here.
What is the recommended way to upgrade? I am asking because I first used the GUI upgrader (with the shield in the notification bar), but when I tried apt-get upgrade, it had a whole lot of upgrades, while the GUI upgrader said it was all up to date. Haven't tried aptitude yet... (I am most used to using apt-get on Ubuntu, though I used to use aptitude on Debian; I don't like to use GUI tools if there is a better command line alternative.)

apt-get is just fine - i hope i'm not stepping on anyones toes here but mintupdate in its current form is much better for the ubuntu-based versions.

you might want to try smxi too (but make it use apt-get if you've already use apt-get or EVER use synaptic)

The Mint updater classifies updates and upgrades into 5 categories based on the likelihood of major system damage if there is a problem.

By default, levels 4 and 5 are not shown in the Updates list and not included in updates performed. This is because level 4 and 5 updates effect the most central, basic systems in the OS, such as the kernel and are not recommended for new users.

The extra updates you see with apt-get are these level 4 and 5 updates. To see definitions of the 5 levels and select the ones you want mintUpdate to install, open mintUpdate and click "Edit" then "Preferences". The window opens to the Levels tab. Simply check the Safe? and Visible? columns for all levels you want to install.

When I shifted to LMDE, I went to do the updates. Only Level 3 and above were allowed to come through by default. I adjusted it so that I could see (Visible) the Level 4 and Level 5 updates. I install them as I see fit.

Don't know if this helps or not, but this is the way I did it. Others have allowed the Level 4 and Level 5 updates to come through, but backup prior to running the Level 4 and 5 updates. From what I can gather, this is just in case of major borcage.
