If your version of VLC was removed this this recent set of updates/upgrades . . . the SynapticManager/MintUpdate will not allow you to reinstall VLC, as dependencies have not been met.
Best to wait for the newer version of VLC, to come down the line.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The 'official' Debian explanation:
Sometimes packages have seemingly recursive dependencies (adding X makes Y uninstallable, Y is waiting for X). This means the new version of X will break the old version of Y, but there's also a new version of Y that needs the new version of X. As soon as all other dependencies are solved, the two packages can be hinted to go in together.

If you did the update and want your VLC back again,
add
deb
http://ftp.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb
http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free
to your /etc/apt/sources list, then
apt update
apt install libva1/stable
apt install vlc
and then wait for the package to be fixed this time instead of tinkering

No problem.
You may or may not want to leave the two lines in your sources.list -- they let you pull packages from stable, but on the other hand they WILL slow down your apt update or gui equivalent.

I actually did it the opposite way. I temporarily changed my main Debian repo to sid, installed VLC and libva1, then repointed the repo to testing. So far no breakage, and I have VLC 1.1.7

+1
That worked fine for me too, though I didn't have to install "libva1", as I had accepted it in the updates.
Thanks, tdockery97

I did the same as tdockery97 and all seems to be well.
I then pointed my repos back to testing (removed the stable repos) so, before I update all I will make sure that vlc isn't being removed again (ie has been fixed)
