dvdrip : Depends: transcode (>= 2:1.0.2-0.8) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: ffmpeg but it is not going to be installed
Both in the multimedia repo.

Where did you get handbrake-gtk from? It's in the multimedia repo, but the version for testing uses libnotify1 and doesn't require libnotify4. That's only a dependency for the sid/unstable package.

Similar thing for mencoder. The testing version doesn't require libasound2 > 1.0.24.1 but the unstable one does.

Can anyone confirm the 201108 respin still has the multimedia testing repo in sources.list and not unstable?

the default 201108 has debian-multimedia testing in the repo, what the users do after is another question

I know, dratted users eh?

My sources.list is as follows:
#Latest-safest
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

#Incoming-dangerous
#deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
#deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
#deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
I haven't done anything else. The version number of handbrake-gtk is 0.9.5-0.6 according to synaptic, and it came from http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing/main

;-)

PS: So, am I tracking newer versions in debian-multimedia than in latest, thus breaking the dependencies? Thing is when I switch to testing, it also fails. I'll try and go direct to ftp.debian.org and see if that fixes it.

tzunder, as i linked in my first post in this page, yes atm, debian-multimedia is out of sync with the latest/incoming repos;
this should be solved briefly with update-pack3 (and if you don't want to leave latest is just a matter of waiting a few days)

anyway, there's something i don't understand: in my xfce tracking latest i can confirm all the issues you pointed before, but in my gnome tracking testing all the pkg would install fine (the output is just a dry-run)

so when you say that in testing it also fails for you, did you dist-upgrade before?
anyway, i'll say it again, if this is not a mission critical issue, wait a few days and update-pack3 will sort it out, if it is change to testing, dist-upgrade and then install them;
it's your call

Thanks. Changing to ftp.debian.org did fix it.
Now I know the nature of the problem I'll just relax when such things happen.
I was just concerned since I was setting up the machine again after a smxi/sgfxi distaster

Is it kosher to change back to debian.linuxmint.com after this?

if you change now, the only real difference you'll notice is a very small update-pack3, afaik

Indeed. I was under the impression that the packages in a repository were supposed to be the same as the ones available from that same repository's website. Apparently not, as http://www.debian-multimedia.org/dists/ ... ke-gtk.php describes -and offers- an older version... :?

I got a new kernel in the updates this morning (3.0.0-3). When I installed it, I got the same dkms errors myself and other people encountered when we first got the 3.0.x branch of the kernel a few weeks ago.

Strangely, I have rebooted my computer already and it looks like everything is working ok. It booted right to GDM and allowed me to log into my xfce with no problem. If I come across any issues, I'll let you know.

The same here gavinhc. This time it seems not to be a problem with the dkms.conf error. I've updated this morning and
until now my system is working well.

Just installed new kernel. Same issue as the two gents above:

Code: Select all

Setting up linux-headers-3.0.0-1-amd64 (3.0.0-3) ...
Examining /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms 3.0.0-1-amd64
dkms.conf: Error! No 'BUILT_MODULE_NAME' directive specified for record #0.
Error! Bad conf file.
File:
does not represent a valid dkms.conf file.
However, rebooted succesfully and no problems so far...

Silly question perhaps, but why does apt-get says it's gonna install linux-headers-3.0.0-1-amd64 when in fact it's version 3.0.0-3?

Regs.

Linux versioning logic looks like it is devised using a monkey and a typewriter, but in fact it isn't. I did read about it once, but my eyes glazed over after a couple of minutes.

If you type

Code: Select all

uname -a
into a terminal does it answer your question?

You see I am completely up to date with LMDE testing and I only have the 3.0.0.1 kernel (although it does mention 3.0.0.3 in brackets??)

Oh no there go my eyes again :?

Is it me or has the latest mintupdate borked something? I'm now regularly getting a "Repository not available" error (with an empty window that's supposed to list the unavailable repos), followed by "Failed to lock /var/lib/apt/lists. The only way out is to manually remove the lock (rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock), but the problem soon comes back.

I've only noticed this since the most recent update to mintupdate and have, for now, disabled mintupdate.
