LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING

Major problem after today's upgrades. Don't remember what got upgraded but it was around 100 packages and needed a reboot to finish the task. When I did a reboot it hung up at my bootsplash, and when I hit Alt-F2 I saw a login prompt. I logged in and tried manually running plasma-desktop and got an error saying "Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11. I reached in my bag for my thumb drives with Mint on them only to find they're not in the bag anymore so I'm at my local library trying to get things working.

I also tried running startx and got a fatal error saying "no screens found." I did some hunting online but can't find anything to resolve my problem. Help! (Being at my library I now have less than an hour online so I'm also in a bit of a time crunch. Sorry for the rush order.)

ETA: I found where the apt log is and called it up. Today's dist-upgrade included linux-headers and linux-image upgrades (I'd type a list but it's realy hard to do looking at my laptop and typing on this Windows system). Not sure if that helps but I wanted to post it since I found it. Also, I have no network so installing anything is going to be impossible. I know, I can't make it easy, can I. I wish I could.

Good news. It turns out I'm not dead in the water after all. I completely forgot that I can boot into an older kernel, complete with my beloved GUI. Now I'm back up, and with 'net, I'm on the hunt for what killed X. I'm starting with doing a reinstall of the Nvidia drivers. I'll post updates when I find a workable solution.

I can't tell y'all how nice it is to be back up and running with the GUI.

Note to self: Stop upgrading with sudo apt-fast dist-upgrade. Apt-get seems to work more reliably, especially with the testing repos.

That's the RPITA, Zero. I'm really surprised they made new kernels available when major graphics card drivers don't build against them. I'd run that phrase that pays before you reboot. It could save you a lot of time and aggravation. I lost over ah hour trying to beat it into submission, and that's 60+ minutes of my life I'll never get back. .

I've been using smxi/sgfxi to install updates and Nvidia drivers for a long time now and it has never let me down yet. I got the new kernel update today and when smxi was finished with the install I got the following message:

message: Your kernel was upgraded to 3.2.0-3-amd64
You will need to reinstall your nVidia driver in Graphics Install.

Which I did with this fine piece of software. No fuss no muss. Rebooted when told to and here I am.

You could say: "Where's the fun in that?" I guess I'm just to old for that sort of fun anymore.

Anyway, I highly recommend using smxi/sgfxi to handle updates.

P.S. If you've never visited their website before, don't be put off by it's simple looks. Once again: Highly recommended.

On a side note, it turns out my missing thumb drives were in fact in the bottom of my bag. I must have missed the pocket when I put them back in at CVS on Sunday and didn't see them until last night. The good news is that if the pooch needs to look for the bobbys again I can grab a LiveUSB if I have to. I'm really hoping one of these kernel upgrades let my Katia (laptop) use my external hard drive again, but that's an adventure for another thread.

Update: I did a relog and a reboot with no complaints from Nvidia, which let the pooch relax. Until he remembered about that cat, of course. I am noticing that Firefox has a new icon in my Fancy Tasks, although the app menu still shows the right icon.

Not sure why the Fx icons are different

I tried changing my icon set and resetting it to my usual MIB-Ossigeno-Icons and even closing Fx, changing icons and restarting the browser, but the wrong icon still shows up on my panel. I'm wondering if this misbehavior will correct itself with a reboot but I'd rather not reboot again for now.

please check if nepomuk/strigi is working properly (was buggy when 4.8.4 entered sid)

I don't usually have Nepo enabled but I turned it on to check it, and yesterday I had to disable it again. It pegged the hell out of my CPUs and killed the RCI. It's unfortunate because I was liking having so much information searchable but it wasn't worth losing the that. I didn't realize how much I use that until I couldn't use it at all.

I thought I'd be clever and snag the new cinnamon release (1.4.0-lmde2UP3) from LMDE incoming, but after a reboot and kernel housekeeping (remove 3.2.0-1; install new 3.2.0-3 headers) cinnamon won't start on either my 32-bit or 64-bit test box.

You all too? Or am I just lucky?
