That does not sound correct. I have not tried this ofcourse yet

Probably those mint-meta-packages use some =-dependency instead of =<... Anyway, I went ahead with the install. Maybe I'll get back to you at some point to report on what happened.

OK, you busted me. Once a day I update from the terminal. I let it do whatever it wants. While the updates you have are what I installed, I do not recall having anything removed. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

It seems that gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad (coming from debian-multimedia) has not been updated yet so it is removed because it conflicts with the new gstreamer0.10-plugins-xxx (coming from debian).
mint-meta-xxx stuff depends on gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad so they get removed too!
I would refrain to update the four gstreamer-related packages (the other updates should not break) until the debian-multimedia package get updated too.

I just updated the python-xapian package plus the gstreamer packages:

• gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
  gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio

Updating just these removed the gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad package. Checked and I can still play MP3s in Rhythmbox, play flashvideo in VLC and youtube with audio in each.

I did notice the mint-meta-debian packages is no longer in the update list.

This package contains plugins from the "bad" set, a set of non-free
plug-ins that might pose distribution problems.

Bad plugins are faac, mpeg2enc, vdpau and xvid.

Maybe some multimedia format can no longer be played by gstreamer-based players after the update.
AFAIK vlc and mplayer should not be affected.

It would - The dependencies tab for xserver-xorg in Synaptic shows that they include xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-input-all and xserver-xorg-video-all. The latter two depend on all of the individual input and display drivers. So, AFAIK updating xserver-xorg will pull in all of the other updates, even if you deselected them, in order to satisfy the dependencies!

Thanks Ok So that answers that but I am still no further forward with the problem of the screen refresh. The problem is definitely with these files as I cannot get a working system after the update. I am having the same problem with Mint 11 so assume there must be a bug.

SOLVED SORT OF

I noted that after updating the above that the 3D graphics which were not working previously, were working. If you rotate the cube when the screen is not refreshing then the screen refresh works perfectly. If I stop compiz at startup then all is perfect. This is therefore a problem with compiz and the new intel driver

I made update today without any following problems. (sudo apt-get update and sudo apt dist-upgrade) As usual.

Isn't a meta-package only a kind of container for a number of packages, only used for easy-installation purpose?

Same issue for me. The dist-upgrade wanted to remove gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad libtar mint-meta-codecs mint-meta-debian.

I decided to freeze these packages (echo "name_of_the_pkg hold | dpkg --set-selections) and wait.

I don't know if this is a good solution because the next dist-upgrade wanted to remove vlc. So I had to freeze it too.

LMDE has been completely trouble free for a while now, but yesterday I ran into this which started with 'gecko-mediaplayer' not updating, I don't think it has been mentioned before so here it is:

I have no idea how this has happened, but I seem to be several versions ahead of you in both libgconf and gecko-mediaplayer. I forced downgrades of both these packages and now my system is back to normal again. So thank you for those apt policy reports they were invaluable. As you probably know, I do not mess with my sources on LMDE so I just cant understand how I have got in front of everyone else on these package versions

BTW, thank you for my welcome back, but I haven't actually been away, I have just been lurking instead of contributing, it is like that every summer with me, I will be back to torture you again full time in the Autumn

Funny viking777, I can see that you use "LMDE, Mint 10, PCLOS". That is exactly what I have installed too. Those are the most performing dists at the moment I think.
I am also trying LM11, installed on an USB stick, but it is not as good as LM10 yet. Too many Ubuntu bugs.

once again, no need to download a deb from an external site when it is in LMDE's repos;

libcairo2 (1.10.2-6) is in synaptic, open synaptic, do a search for libcairo2, highlight the pkg, then in main menu, package, force version and choose 1.10.2-6 (testing), install it, after this F-Spot should install fine aswell

Well I just noticed that I'm also hit by this missing libcairo 1.10.2 issue. I don't need F-Spot (although it is currently uninstallable), but GIMP (2.7.3 ~git from Frickelplatz sid/main repo, in use due to their packaging of Chromium) now fails to start with an error:

I tried removing the frick^^freaky GIMP v2.7.3, but the regular v2.6 doesn't show up and I still only have the non-debian libcairo2 1.10.0-1ubuntu2 installed/available. What's blocking the Debian Testing libcairo2 1.10.2-6 from showing up? I do see the genuine Debian libcairo2-doc of that updated version.

Can I just use the Package -> Force Version option?


PS. There's a bug filed some two months ago against libcairo2: "LMDE ships with broken libcairo2"

(offtopic mumble... I do appreciate having the Frickel packaged Chromium around, but I'm increasingly worried about the side effects of Frickel's other packages intruding...)
