I've only noticed this since the most recent update to mintupdate and have, for now, disabled mintupdate.

Not seeing that here. Usually you get that error when there is another instance of apt running. For example, trying to refresh lists or update via MinutUpdate when you have Synaptic open or a terminal that's running an apt process that hasn't been closed out yet. I know, not a solution but that's the only time that I know of when you'll see what you're seeing.

All's well with me and mine, our little valley here is well protected. The rest of Vermont came off pretty badly I'm afraid. Hasn't been a storm or storm damage like this since the hurricane of 1927. I even had a friend from Ireland contact me to let me know that Vermont had made the RTE news. Vermonter's are stubborn cusses though. We'll clean up the mess and rebuild. Many thanks for asking, by the way. :)

Not sure if this was gone over earlier, but I got this error during dist-upgrade today:
Code: Select all
Setting up linux-headers-3.0.0-1-amd64 (3.0.0-3) ...
Examining /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms 3.0.0-1-amd64
dkms.conf: Error! No 'BUILT_MODULE_NAME' directive specified for record #0.
Error! Bad conf file.
File:
does not represent a valid dkms.conf file.
I use virtualbox-ose and the nvidia 280xx driver, and dkms seems to handle both OK. Does the above error affect something I'm not seeing, or is it meaningless? The only problem I'm currently having is with an app running in a virtualbox WinXP machine. The pass-through optical drive is reading a lot of errors that I don't think are actually on the disc. Maybe I should try booting an earlier kernel and compare?

Todays update upgraded foomatic-db and some cups pks:

Code: Select all
Die folgenden NEUEN Pakete werden installiert:
  colord libcolord1 liblcms2-2
Die folgenden Pakete werden aktualisiert (Upgrade):
  cups cups-bsd cups-client cups-common cups-ppdc devscripts
  foomatic-db-compressed-ppds foomatic-db-engine gir1.2-pango-1.0 kbd libcups2
  libcupscgi1 libcupsdriver1 libcupsimage2 libcupsmime1 libcupsppdc1 libffi5
  libnss3-1d libpango1.0-0 ntfs-3g

My printer does not work and the shutdown dialogue is looking crazy (no written words in it, only square symbols instead)
I think, i'll have to reconfigure cups and will report later whether it works. Which package causes the crazy shutdown dialogue i
don't know.

Edit: Both is ok now. I removed my HP Printer and Generic-Cups-PDF-Printer then added them again. The shutdown dialogue healed
itself.

Gerd, as for the shutdown dialogue messed up the culprit should be kbd, but a restart, maybe a logout would do it as well, puts everything in place.

Yes zerozero, a restart heals dialogue boxes and nautilus. On my second testing system after an upgrade i found it's not only the shutdown box with square symbols in it.

Since the recent update my Awn Dock applets all crash. The dock plus applets were updated. Is anyone aware of any change of graphics requirements following the update?

I have deleted Awn and installed cairo dock which is working fine with my very basic Intel intrgrated graphice.

Evolution is deleting my Inbox!

Have been away for a couple of weeks and when I came back (yesterday 3rd Sept) I downloaded all my pop emails (some 400+, mostly mailing lists) and then updated the sysyem, including Evolution to version 3.0.2-1 (today 4th Sept).

Upon starting Evolution, it opens, says it's checking mailbox integrity, and then promptly deletes all my emails from the inbox. I had a backup from two weeks ago, but have now lost all my emails I downloaded yesterday (400+). I backed up /home/martin/.local/share/evolution and copied the backup from two weeks ago across, started evolution, and it did exactly the same again.

I have some rules set up to copy the mailing lists into other folders. In those folders, some mail remains, but they are all older mails from around the middle of June time. There were more recent emails in those folders so it looks like evolution decided to delete all my emails from the inbox regardless of date and some from other folders but with a date bias!

This problem has occurred on my laptop running LMDE - 64bit, but not on my desktop LMDE - 32bit. When I updated that after my laptop, I got a dialogue box with a warning asking me if I wanted to exit evolution or migrate to a new mailbox format. I migrated and everything went OK. No problems. However on my 64bit laptop I never got any such warning and now have problems.

Is this just a 64bit issue. Any one else with this problem? I guess my emails have gone forever now?

Thanks all.

Well maybe this is why Ubuntu switched to Thunderbird - and maybe you should think about the same move?. I have never been an evolution user myself, so it is difficult for me to comment fully, but as zerozero's link stated:

evolution
A big transition is expected for evolution.

Big transition maybe = big problems, I don't know.

I would be amazed if your emails are really gone, but having never used evolution I would be hard pressed to tell you where they are.

My answer? Gmail. But because I am not a fool and wouldn't trust Google as far as I could throw them, I sort and store all my emails on their server and if I think anything is important enough to keep I forward it to my own pop mail server and collect it with Thunderbird. There are more comprehensive solutions than that (involving imap and sychronisation), but that solution works for me. I have an online mail database of all received mail and a backup copy on my own computer of important stuff, therefore it doesn't really matter if I lose one or the other.

Thanks. I think you are right. Might make a new email for mailing lists only, have that as pop and my main address as imap so I don't lose anything important again!

Todays update (2010.09.05) came with a dpkg warning:

Code: Select all
dpkg warning

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

in english:

dpkg: Warning: »ldconfig« not found in the Path or isn't executable
dpkg: Warning: »start-stop-daemon« not found in the Path or isn't executable
dpkg: Error: 2 expected applications not found in the Path or not executable
Note: Path of root normally should enclude /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin und /sbin
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

I don't know which Path is ment or where to find it. At first i decided to ignore the warning :?

I think that is a problem with your computer Gerd, nothing to do with the upgrade. Have you been altering PATH variables yourself?

Start a root terminal and run the command

Code: Select all
$PATH

It should contain all those locations and maybe a few others.

I found this was caused by bash-completion. It made the environment HUGE. Can't remember if it was my LMDE or PCLinuxOS install that had the problem but I turned it off and all is well.
