Hey guys,
Hope if its Friday where you are you are having a good one.
Now for my question.
I just had to change Laptops today and have inherited a Lenovo G550. It has an Intel Mobile 4 series Integrated Controller.
I have a second monitor hooked up to it.
I want to use this command to change the resolution and where the monitor resides when I start up LM.
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1366x768 --output VGA1 --mode 1440x900 --right-of LVDS1

I don't know where to put this command so it uses it when LM starts.
Or if this is the right way to do this.
Thanks
Dan

#669949 - sysvinit: Break X11: no more mouse and keyboard - Debian Bug report logs - http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=669949

Either downgrade to testing version, or add the sidcution repo and install their fixed packages.

deb http://packages.siduction.org/razorqt/ unstable main
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
should install the fixed packages as they are a higher version than the packages in the 'official' Debian sid repo.
Thanks for finding that bug report. I notice in the report that people mention the problem is having /run be a symlink to /var/run. If the /run link is removed and an actual directory put in its place then some users on that thread are stating that it works fine. Am I understanding that correctly? Anybody here tried that?

I can confirm that this solves the problem of the not responding mouse and keyboard.

linuxmint-xfce-201104-dvd-64bit.iso -> no problem
linuxmint-201109-xfce-dvd-64bit.iso and later -> problem exist, /run is a link.

1) as root, delete the link /run
2) make a directory /run
3) reboot
/var/run will automagically change to a link.

initscripts sysv-rc sysvinit sysvinit-utils are version 2.88dsf-26
(with other known bugs reported by apt-listbugs)

another fix is to downgrade these packages...

I take it that this /run - /var/run move is a suggested workaround; it surely can't be the basic cause of the problem with the package updates.

I used this method a long time ago...to correct an error message at shutdown
It's the new file system policy of Debian.

In Aptosid and in pure Debian itself, /run is a Directory and /var/run is a link to /run.
I have read somwhere in the internets some time ago, that /run as a link was a workaround for another issue.
At this time my opinion is, that /run as a directory is the correct setting.
But these packages have problems, thats true...
Maybe an upstream developer can say more about /run.

I made a new LMDE install on an old notebook 2 days ago, but before i corrected this problem,
i updated and got a non working keyboard and touchpad.
So i had to find the cause and a solution.

Now that that mess is sorted perhaps I can trouble you with a question? I couldn't find this on a search. Before rebooting, in order to avoid the problem, I actually installed these downloaded .deb files from the aptosid razorqt repository. I should have just added the repository but I was getting GPG errors. But now I have regular .debs that are "locally installed." I can't seem to install the versions that come with debian. Here are a couple of things I've tried:

Code: Select all

eric@crlsns ~ $ sudo apt-get -s --reinstall install sysvinit -t unstable
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Reinstallation of sysvinit is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
eric@crlsns ~ $ sudo apt-get -s install sysvinit -t unstable
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
sysvinit is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I also tried to just remove the package so I could then re-install it. But there are tons of dependencies and it says it's an essential package. I worry about something breaking in between the time when I remove it and I can reinstall it. How can I install the version from unstable? Oh, here is the info on the packages:

Code: Select all

eric@crlsns ~ $ sudo apt-cache policy sysvinit
sysvinit:
  Installed: 2.88dsf-26.1
  Candidate: 2.88dsf-26.1
  Version table:
 *** 2.88dsf-26.1 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.88dsf-26 0
        990 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages

GeneC wrote:For me, I have learned that running SID I have to make frequent backups with Clonezilla. Ten Minutes to clone a partition, and about the same to restore.
Sometimes you can fix a borked installation, sometimes, not so easy. Some times you don't want to mess around and get back on quickly. That's the time to restore partition with Clonezilla. That's what i did with my above problem.

That is not helping you though, sorry.
To fix it?
I really have no idea. Wish I did.
Perhaps someone has a fix for you.
Look at some of the other forum links on the first post.

If I come across something. I will let you know with a post here.

Just for info. It appears that whether you suffered from the /run issue or not is simply a matter of how old your install is. The default Debian layout changed. Mine was fine because I started again on my new shiny SSD only recently. The fun of a rolling release.

GregE,

trying to understand a bit

my old Debian Sid, pure Debian started installed from Debian netinstall, fully du and no issue with sound/keyboard/mouse
apt-cache policy sysvinit-utils
sysvinit-utils:
Installed: 2.88dsf-26
Candidate: 2.88dsf-26
Version table:
*** 2.88dsf-26 0
500 http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

then I du another partition which is LMDE-xfce-with Debian Sid repos (no mint repos)
du gave me no sound/no mouse/no keyboard

is LMDE different with Debian?

Hi Wayne,

A few months back there was discussion in this thread about changing /run. Did you change and then just forget? I did not remember reading that stuff until after I saw the solution listed. At the time I realised I did not have to alter my system because it was a new install from a new Debian snapshot and was already in the new layout. I added Mint to a new Debian install because of the way I needed to configure my SSD and HDD.

LMDE is Debain Testing and is the same, but with filtered/metered updates. If you enable testing or Sid then you rapidly become more Debian than Mint. The question is, does the new LMDE install disk use the new layout? I am guessing yes, but if you use an old one and update then this issue arises.

As to why one install works and another is a problem - thousands of packages, thousands of combinations of hardware, kernels, software, desktops etc

:)

Can I see if I've got this clear, please? On my system, /run is already an unlinked directory and /var/run is a link to /run. But I get the keyboard/mouse issue when I update the "sysv" packages. So it looks as if the suggested workaround is already in place here, but isn't mitigating the problem.

maybe try the packages that craigevil suggested above - from Siduction. Or just replug keyboard amd mouse for a few days and wait for another update.
