DeepDayze

Welcome aboard! :)

==========================

Well, not much new in SID.

Full DU went OK with no problems
(all of the xorg packages are STILL being witheld)?

Code: Select all
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  libgcj-bc xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-input-synaptics xserver-xorg-input-wacom xserver-xorg-video-apm xserver-xorg-video-ark
  xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-chips xserver-xorg-video-cirrus xserver-xorg-video-fbdev xserver-xorg-video-i128 xserver-xorg-video-i740
  xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-mach64 xserver-xorg-video-mga xserver-xorg-video-neomagic xserver-xorg-video-nouveau xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

  xserver-xorg-video-vesa xserver-xorg-video-vmware xserver-xorg-video-voodoo
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 35 not upgraded.

I got tired of waiting, so I tired to force the install of xorg
got this=
Xorg.png

Decided to ignore it, and let it un-install all those packages, to re-install after DU,
But got this=

xorg error.png

Guess there is nothing to do but wait. :x

@GeneC I got around that by temporarily commenting out the LMDE repos and refreshing the repos then forcing the upgrade. Your problem is due to the LMDE repos taking precedence.

Need to get 13.5 MB of archives.
After this operation, 9,511 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

The xserver, and Nvidia work ok, but I do have a little problem.
The appearance of fonts in my browser (Chrome 15), don't look so hot.
Not horrible, but not as nice as before.

Looking at the packages upgrade I see a bunch of fontconfig packages that might be the culprits!?

Glad that worked for you, GeneC...once you are fully d-u'ed you can reinstate the LMDE repos if you wish

Try reconfiguring your fonts:

Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

or

Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config

HTH

@DeepDayze

I didnt get a chance to try your fix.
Being the impatient person that I am, I restored a clone I had just made this morning, and held back the following =

Code: Select all
  fontconfig
  fontconfig-config
  libfontconfig1

End result was perfect.
Great fonts again, and only one package ( libgcj-bc) held back, after the Linux Mint repo was uncommented.

Code: Select all
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  libgcj-bc
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

Thanks! :)

Hey ZZ! :D

Sure thing

Code: Select all
gene@zordon ~ $ cat /etc/apt/preferences
Package: *
Pin: release o=linuxmint
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: origin packages.linuxmint.com
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian
Pin-Priority: 500

Its standard pinning.
I haven't modified it!

Just to double check. I looked at the one in my new 2011-09 "Testing" install, and they are both the same.
I am not very savvy on "Apt pinning", but I am guessing that the higher number has priority?
That would give "Linuxmint" repo Priority over "Debian"? And explain why the xorg packages were withheld?

hi Gene,
yeahh, higher have priority, and the fact that disabling the mint repo cleared the xorg updates really makes me wonder :shock:

there's only one way to test that, but i'm not gonna ask you to try it :lol: :lol:
- load the latest clone;
- before update, change the preference files, so that all repos read 700;
- do the D-U;
but of course i'm not asking you to try this :mrgreen:

Heck. I just got this fully updated for the first time in weeks...
Maybe, if I feel adventurous I will try later, but I am enjoying this too much right now... :mrgreen:

Sorry to rain on the parade, but it is still the case that no matter what I do, if I try to upgrade any of the xserver-related packages I am threatened with the removal of xserver-xorg, which would prevent my desktop from loading. It seems clear that there is some problem lurking around my system, but I have no idea what it is.

Brian, did you tried the way posted a couple posts above: disable linuxmint repo for a moment and do the D-U? if it goes through with sucess, you can enable it later.

Brian, this is a long shot, and not sure if it will work but can't do you worst :lol:
- i guess your apt/preferences are standard
- if you change that, so all pin-priority read 700
- and after try update and D-U?

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it makes no difference.

I'm fairly sure that I have an xserver-related glitch peculiar to my system, but how to fix it remains a mystery!

honestly, no idea :shock:
you still have all those gtk pks pinned? maybe there's the issue, don't know, really
by Brian49 on Fri Jul 29, 2011 2:25 pm
At the moment, I don't see why any user who doesn't wish to move to Gnome 3 can't simply pin all the relevant packages for as long as they wish. I currently have 62 packages pinned from the Unstable and Experimental repositories. In other words, there is nothing inevitable about making that move.
