Recently, the i18n translation files from the Unstable repository often fail to download when running apt-get upgrade. Is there any way of routinely excluding them, please? Many thanks.

Post subject: XORG to be REMOVED
As of now, do not dist-upgrade. The Xorg is transitioning from 7.6 to 7.7 and the old (not yet uploaded) packages are to be removed. Wait until the upload of xorg 7.7 is complete and nothing is to be removed before allowing a dist-upgrade to go through, then stand by for transition issues to present themselves.

yeah aptitude asked this morning if I would like to remove everything xorg. After choosing "F$%& NO!", it skipped that update and carried on.

Code: Select all
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 xserver-xorg-video-openchrome : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-s3virge : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-trident : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-sis : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-savage : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-tdfx : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-vmware : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-r128 : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-vesa : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-s3 : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-voodoo : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-sisusb : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-tseng : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
 xserver-xorg-video-rendition : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

      Remove the following packages:
1)      task-desktop
2)      task-gnome-desktop
3)      xserver-xorg-video-all

See above. Choosing 'n' (F%$#& NO!) will result in:

Oh the fun of sid. Just wait a day or so to d-u.

Code: Select all
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  xserver-xorg-input-synaptics xserver-xorg-video-vesa xserver-xorg-video-vmware xserver-xorg-video-voodoo
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libasprintf0c2 libgettextpo0
The following packages have been kept back:
  xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-video-chips xserver-xorg-video-cirrus xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
  xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-mach64 xserver-xorg-video-radeon
The following packages will be upgraded:
  gettext gettext-base lame libaacplus2 libaudiofile1 libmp3lame0 libmpg123-0 libncurses5 libncursesw5 libqalculate5
  libsmbclient libtinfo5 libupower-glib1 libwbclient0 ncurses-base ncurses-bin ncurses-term upower x11-xserver-utils xauth
  xserver-common
21 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 4 to remove and 8 not upgraded.

apt-get showing it is a bit smarter than aptitude, the only package that I would need that would be removed is xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.

Or you can put xserver-common on hold and the d-u can proceed safely.
Code: Select all
# echo xserver-common hold|dpkg --set-selections

Code: Select all
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libasprintf0c2 libgettextpo0
The following packages have been kept back:
  xserver-common xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-video-chips xserver-xorg-video-cirrus

In trying to install Oracle Virtual Box .deb file I am getting this error today:
Error: Cannot install 'libqt4-opengl'

Anyone know what I need to do to get this installed.
Thanks

Dan,
I usually just install virtualbox from Debian repos.
after that, install extension pack
and add myself to user.

Alternative, you could also install virtualbox using smxi script.
smxi script is very good for many things: install ati/nvidia driver, d.u. virtualbox, liquorix kernel, etc.. try it and see if you like it..

# apt-cache policy virtualbox

Wayne,
I thought the one in the repos didn't have USB support so I have always installed it from the Oracle site.
I'll try it and see how it works.
Thanks

Todays big Xorg upgraded broke X for me, nothing removed just X crashing.

Fix: Removed my xorg.conf and installed xserver-xorg-video-ati rebooted and X worked, been using the -radeon driver on this laptop since I installed Debian almost 2 years ago. Just weird that it would break and installing -ati would fix it.

Now inxi -G looks weird, but if it works guess I can't complain, after all its free. :)

My xorg update went similar to Wayne's. I am running Nvidia so I let it un-install
Code: Select all
Removing xserver-xorg-video-s3virge ...
Removing xserver-xorg-video-tdfx ..

Upgrade went fine after that with no probs. :D

I still have two .cil files on hold. I dont need mono for anthing other than Pinta, Tomboy. I am just holding on to see if they eventually  upgrade ok. If not, I will just use Gnote instead of Tomboy and do without Pinta.

Gene,

You could try removing Mono and thus Tomboy and Pinta, then do an update and then try and install Tomboy and see what it puts back. The other option is to open Synaptic and check the properties of the offending packages and it will tell you where the dependency issues are. Sometimes dependency issues can be traced to a redundant lib and all it needs is purging.

:)

Edit: Checking the Debian errors the answer might be as simple as grabbing the latest Mono from Experimental. The offending package is gtk-sharp2-gapi which apparently is no longer needed.

This is all guessing, I do not have mono installed.

Hi Greg

I'll give that a try tomorrow. I had already gotten rid of mono in my LMDE/Gnome partition . I guess I am mostly holding on to it in LMDE/Mate just to see if and when it get upgraded ok. I would think there would be a fix, as several gnome apps wont run without it. Perhaps in experimental as you suggest. I really like Pinta.

Anybody else having KDE/Qt issues? I don't use KDE but I have the libraries installed for a few applications. When I try to upgrade with aptitude now I'm presented with a slew of choices, but mostly just the first and variations of the second below:

Code: Select all
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libqt4-dev-bin{a}
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libphonon4 libqt4-dbus libqt4-declarative libqt4-designer libqt4-dev libqt4-help libqt4-network libqt4-opengl libqt4-opengl-dev libqt4-qt3support libqt4-script
  libqt4-scripttools libqt4-sql libqt4-sql-mysql libqt4-sql-sqlite libqt4-svg libqt4-test libqt4-xml libqt4-xmlpatterns libqtassistantclient4 libqtcore4 libqtgui4{b}
  libqtwebkit-dev libqtwebkit4 phonon qdbus qt4-designer qt4-dev-tools qt4-linguist-tools qt4-qmake
30 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 43.9 MB of archives. After unpacking 2,499 kB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libqtgui4 : Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.9.0) but 2.8.0-2.1ubuntu3 is installed.
