Mint Update -- Still A Work In Progress?

LMDE 32 bit, 2.6.38 debian kernel, fully updated.
After using the latest Mint Update this morning, and installing the 18 updates (python), Just out of curiosity, I then ran the apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade....and found 2 updates in the upstream filter.
My question is that I thought from this forum discussions that the LMDE Mint Update was NOW like a "one-stop-shopping" application.
Apparently you still have to run both places (I would have said run 3 places, but the "mark all upgrades" button is gone in synaptic).
So, is this Mint Update app still a "w-i-p"?
Thanks.
