Re: UPDATE PACK 3 FEEDBACK THREAD (SOLVED)

Everytime I open my mint updater, it shows that I have 55 updates waiting, but after that it says "system up to date" and I can't update anything. Guess it will let me update when it feels like it is safe? :?:

And I don't even have this in my sources list:

Code: Select all
deb http://linux-mint.froonix.org/ debian main upstream import backport

mrjoeyman, if your sources.list are still these ones viewtopic.php?f=198&t=83353&p=483503#p483676 you are perfectly good to go, don't worry about that;
about the pkgs that don't update, it's a different story;
open terminal, do
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and copy the output in here;
we will see what's going on there :)

Yes they are still:
Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
deb http://liveusb.info/multisystem/depot all main
deb-src http://liveusb.info/multisystem/depot all main

When I get access to my system in the morning I will report the findings..................thanks.

I read this in a tutorial by Clem about how to upgrade via apt...........

This tutorial provides the necessary information to upgrade mint to the latest version without reinstalling/restoring. For a potentially trouble-free upgrade method see: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2

The various caveats in the above tutorial apply, and this may break your system,

Then it says to do this (already as root, thus no sudo) to upgrade:

Code: Select all
Run 'apt-get update'
Run 'apt-get dist-upgrade'

You told me to:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Are you sure you want me to do that? I am confident that you know what you are doing, but I just wanted to check first in case, in between helping the zillion noobs here, you might have had "one of those moments?" :mrgreen:

:lol: mrjoeyman, i appreciate the concerns with my mental sanity, but i still ain't lost it, not this time anyway :mrgreen:
that howto you quote is meant for the ubuntu-based ed. and for when you want to upgrade from one release to another;

in LMDE the dist-upgrade is the recommended way to keep your system upto date, so fear not :lol:

As you can see it upgraded the multisystem program. I checked the mint updater again and it still shows 63 updates available, but I can't download them because it says its up to date still (and has a little check mark on the tray icon)

Sorry for butting in here, but I think if you do:
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
then it will upgrade those packages.
(At least, that is my understanding, I have been doing "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade" for years on Debian, Ubuntu, and recently on Linux Mint and LMDE... If I am wrong please enlighten me.)

@Pepas and @mrjoeyman, the dist-upgrade command performs already the upgrade in itself:
dist-upgrade
dist-upgrade, in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary.

so it's not that; on the other hand, this
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

tells me that apt doesn't see any pkg held back, and being MU a front-end of apt, i fail to see where it can find those 63 to update and then at the same time says that the system is upto date :shock:

- first things, first
Code: Select all
apt-cache policy mintupdate-debian

share with us the output;
then, reboot, open again MU and see if that message is still there;
report back.

mint updater wont update

Postby mrjoeyman on Mon Oct 17, 2011 11:18 pm

Zero the output from that command is:

mrjoeyman@laptop ~/Desktop $ apt-cache policy mintupdate-debian
mintupdate-debian:
Installed: 1.0.4
Candidate: 1.0.4
Version table:
*** 1.0.4 0
700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

After reboot, it still shows all those updates pending, but reports "up to date"

Here are the screenprints in order, the first being the apt get update dist upgrade:

Since I can only use three screenshots per post, see the next post for the screenshot of the refresh of the update manager after rebooting after all of these commands were carried out.....................................

Here is what I see when I refresh after all of the above commands:

Screenshot-Downloading Package Information-1.png
Screenshot-Downloading Package Information-1.png (22.33 KiB) Viewed 798 times

And after refreshing, I have the "your system is up to date" at the bottom:
Screenshot-Update Manager.png

and then the checkmark is on the updater icon in the tray. Any ideas?

:) ahh now i see it, don't worry "downloading file 55 0f 55" means that MU is checking the repos, if you expand the "show for individual files" you will understand a little easier.

Okay well when I expand the show details option it shows the files being "hit" for each file and then reports "failed" for each. But I will take your word that it is ok :) So when it is time for files to be updated, then my updater will download them? :?: :?:
