updating problems

Hi,
I'm a long term Debian user who tried LMDE earlier this year though I decided to stay with Debian as a result of update problems LMDE. However with the introduction of Gnome 3 into Debian Testing I decided to try LMDE again. I downloaded the latest .iso and installed it and I still have updating problems.
My question isn't about how to slove the updating issue but more to ask if this updating is a common problem that faces some/all installations of LMDE?
