[lmde] apt-get update & apt-get dist-upgrade and themes

Postby bbach on Sun Nov 27, 2011 2:40 am

I was running along happily and hadn't done an update in a while. Got a bit aggressive and did a update and dist-upgrade and now I seem to have gnome 3 with a whole new look and feel. Everything seems to be working fine but I'm sure it will take a while to get used to.

This is what I am looking at:

Anyway, the issue I have is that I seem to have some sort of stock debian theme. How to I get something that looks more minty?

Thanks -- Bud

What you see is only the debian background wallpaper and you can change it to a wallpaper of your choice.
GTK3 themes and wallpapers are available here - http://gnome-shell.deviantart.com/gallery/29380653
The Mint-X-Metal theme is in the repos.

Thanks guys. I do have the mint-x-theme installed from the repos. Still missing something. I've never really changed themes under Gnome so I'm a bit clueless.

My /usr/share/themes show 143 themes but can't find a tools to use to change to them.

I would have thought I'd find something under:

Activities->Applications->System Tools

to change the theme but nothing obvious. In searching around with google, I see references to Gnome Tweak Tool. But can't find that in the repos. Do I need that and need to build it from source?

Thanks for helping. -- Bud

Add this line

Code: Select all
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

to your sources.list and comment out your latest repos for a moment.

That worked! Thanks. Now, how do I adjust what is displayed in the main top bar, like the date, usability, sound, network - etc. The main issue is the icons on the upper right got squished when I changed the gnome-shell theme.... Thanks again! -- Bud

bbach, those latest repos weren't for sure the ones you had active when you did the dist-upgrade that got you to gnome3.

edit1: concerning the themes error display make sure that the themes you d/l are for the shell v.3, you will find a lot for 3.2 and those won't work

edit2: in the following link you will find some tweaks and tips for this shell v. viewtopic.php?f=201&t=85102

I used this site - http://intgat.tigress.co.uk/rmy/extensions/index.html - for tweaking the g-shell.
The extensions contained in gnome-shell-frippery-0.2.7.tgz are working.

No they weren't. This is what they were:

Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free

I changed due to something I think I saw on the mint blog about the release. Now I'm not sure what I should be using,
