Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
Hey "ZZ"
Welcome aboard!
About CPU usage. I also had been about 50% with Compiz(as seen above). But today is at around 15%? I had switched to 'Mint-Z-Mate' theme (as suggested by Clems' blog post) and it did reduce CPU usage. Oddly when I switched back to 'Ambience' theme where I had been getting 50%, it still at 15%. Not sure why that is, but glad to see it.

Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
thank you, and it's good to be back online and with my box after these daysGeneC wrote: Welcome aboard!
about compiz/MATE i never did use it a lot in the old gnome2.x, so is not a biggy for me, but i understand it can be for some; (but i was using minty-freshness, so it can explain the high cpu usage, have to try with Mint-Z-Mate to see if it makes a difference)
one thing i did noticed is that following Steve's advise to create a new user helps a lot;
/back tonight to play a bit more
Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
10 days from my initial Mate install, and all is still working fine.
High CPU usage (the main problem) now seems more under control.
Using Ambience theme getting about 15% cpu usage, higher than the 3% from Gnome shell, but much better than the 50% usage at first install.
Little bugs
1. Weather applet is supposed to be avialable
2. Quite long boot times from login to usable desktop? (I have many start-up apps that I don't use turned off ).
In all, quite nice.
Good work 'stefano-k'

Weather applet is on mate-applet.
Invest applet is on mate-applet too, but it do not work.

I'm rebuilding all packages with the upcoming 1.1.0 MATE release. I think many bugs are solved in this release.
Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
Booted up this morning to find MATE completely un-installed from my system?
I have no idea what happened. I did nothing that i know of to have cause this.
Residual config from synaptic.
Re-installing 'Mate-core'.
EDIT:
Everything is back to normal.
EDIT 2:
Ah! the joys of 'senility'
OK. It was something I did yesterday. I had uninstalled mate-keyring (in an effort to stop mate asking for password--unsafe storage did not work). Mate-keyring uninstalled mate-core, which I thought was just a 'meta-package'. It also un-installed everything 'mate', my error.

Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
I'm uploading new 1.1 MATE packages into tridex.net repository. When complete, debian and LMDE users need to change the row in sources.list (wheezy instead of sid):
You need to make this change when you will have 404 Error during apt-get update.
Code: Select all
deb http://tridex.net/repo/debian/ wheezy main
Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
Thanks Stefano.
I just added the new repo. Its not functional yet, so everyone keep using the old one for now.
I will post when I find stuff in it
The new 'tridex wheezy' repo
http://mate.karapetsas.com/
The new 'wheezy' packages will be ver. 1.1*
We are now at 1.0* with the old 'SID' repo

The new Mate repo just came on line, and updates to Mate 1.1* are available.
If you addded Mate you need to change your repos from

Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
Thanks for that Stefano!
Upgrade went smoothly.
Boot times seem faster (was quite slow from logon to desktop before)
1. Mint menu applet no longer loads.
2. CPU usage still high (45-50%) with compiz, Mint Mate-Z theme.
Everything else is running fine.

I tried the Mint Mate-Z theme because it was suggested by Clem to cure the high CPU problems in Mint Lisa 12stefano-k wrote:I didnt test MATE+compiz yet. I will try it to debug the high CPU usage. http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial ... 5#mate-cpuWorkaround for 100% CPU usage
Many themes aren't compatible with MATE yet. If you find MATE anormally slow and your CPU reaches 100% very often, try to change the theme. The following themes are known to work well with MATE:
Mint-Z-Mate
Carbon
Doesn't seem to matter what theme I use.
Thanks for the work on Mate.

without compiz the system is smooth and light on the CPU, with compiz on not really
xorg and mateconfd-2 (?) running high.

Re: LMDE Gnome 3 - adding MATE
Thanks stefano,
Update my LMDE-minor -Sid-gnome with new Mate version on wheezy repos.
Old comp, 9-yr old, , single CPU. 32-bit
No mintmenu, no compiz, just top and bottom panel, like old gnome2
seem snappy at that age
I remember also older mate version did not allow me to add applet on top panel ( by right click), now with this new version it works

Stefano.
Thanks for that. Got my Mintmenu back.
For those of you who want Mintmenu again. Do the upgrades. I had to use the new Mintmenu from Lisa (mintmenu 5.2.8 )
The old Debian one (mintmenu 5.2.4) wont work.
You dont have to add the Lisa repo. You can download the .deb directly from here.

Very fast fix, Stefano. You guys are doing excellent work.
