install/update issue: linuxmint-201109-gnome-dvd-64bit.
Update manager hangs, says there are broken packages. Synaptic says it fixed any issues. Same thing again with update manager.

So, I ran
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I took all of the suggested defaults...

now the System menu does not have either Preferences or Administration sub menus.
did I do something wrong?

Hi sdibaja,

I just installed linuxmint-201109-gnome-dvd-64bit as well yesterday. Can you precise which packages are broken?

When I first ran the updater, it hanged at one point and aborted giving me an error with a package. I searched these forums and the consensus was to remove the package as it was never used anyways. I can confirm that it indeed worked, although (It's a shame I don't remember the name of the package though and I'm not on the same computer at the moment to track it back). Try using the search function of the forums to search for the broken packages, most likely someone has had the same problem.

As for the sub-menus, I'll let someone else take a go at it as I don't have much of a clue.

I hope you'll get it to work!

EDIT: I came across another thread with someone who recently had problems updating following the LMDE install. Maybe check it out: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=198&t=96524

OOPS! I forgot something...
in the process of trying to get Update manager to run I disabled all of the level 2 and 3 updates before I tried APT.
I am now rerunning the updates with all of the 1137 additional files... maybe that is the key to the weirdness.
I will report back...

see this post viewtopic.php?f=185&t=82346
1- change the repos before any update
2- the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad breakage is documented in there as well

I was already underway before I saw your post...
I had a total meltdown, so this yet another fresh install.

first I followed your link, changed the repos as suggested
refresh of update manager gave me this message:
"Release file expired, ignoring http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/dist ... ng/Release (invalid since 195d 23h 44min 20s)"

should I continue with the 40 recommended updates or punt?

I have been thru this several times... being a bit cautious now :D
thanks

Just a quick thank you for this post. I couldn't for thee life of me get theUpdate Manager to actually install anything, but following the directions behind that link, changing the repos in sources.list and then deselecting gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, was all it took. I'm now happily updating, so thanks again. You saved me lots of headaches and time. :)
