Failed to fetch!!!

Postby Myself on Fri Apr 06, 2012 2:30 am

Used Update Manager last evening to check for updates - LMDE, Iceweasel, Chrome,, and others but it just locks up. Eventually I do see an update asking me to upgrade from mintupdate 104 to 105 but it refuses to update. I have tried again this morning but it looks like the repositories are either down or do not exist (?).

Got the same issue.

sudo apt-get update:
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian InRelease
Get:1 http://packages.linuxmint.com debian Release.gpg [197 B]
Get:2 http://packages.linuxmint.com debian Release [12.2 kB]
Get:3 http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/main amd64 Packages [13.1 kB]
Get:4 http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/upstream amd64 Packages [8,656 B]
Get:5 http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/import amd64 Packages [54.8 kB]
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/import TranslationIndex
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/main TranslationIndex
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/upstream TranslationIndex
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/import Translation-en_US
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/import Translation-en
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/main Translation-en_US
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/main Translation-en
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/upstream Translation-en_US
Ign http://packages.linuxmint.com debian/upstream Translation-en

You see wich packages are ignored.

and it finally times-out on: Connecting to debian.linuxmint.com (204.45.82.130)
after wich your message is shown.

I suppose the servers are a bit busy...

Watch the blog, guys.

Clem wrote:Server problems

We are aware of the server problem and we are currently working on it.

The server is up but it cannot satisfy the huge amount of traffic at the moment. It can achieve 1Gbps. At the moment, a few people are downloading the updates very fast while many others are facing timeouts and errors.

We are currently trying to reduce the maximum speed available per connection, to ensure more people can connect to the server at the same time.

Workarounds

If you can postpone your update to later on today or even tomorrow, you’re likely to skip the traffic and to enjoy faster speeds.

Alternatively, you can point your APT sources to a mirror.

To find a mirror near you, visit http://www.linuxmint.com/mirrors.php and scroll down to the “Mirrored Debian Latest repositories” section.

Choose a mirror, open its URL in your browser and look at its “update-pack-info.txt”, if it shows “version=4″, that means the mirror is up to date and you can replace debian.linuxmint.com with the mirror URL in your /etc/apt/sources.list.

News Update

The main server was shutdown temporarily and is now offline
4 mirrors appear to be up to date:
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/linu ... an/latest/ (Australia)
http://lnx.apollo-hw.ro/linuxmint.com/latest/ (Romania)
http://speglar.simnet.is/mint/latest/ (Iceland)
http://free.nchc.org.tw/linuxmint/debian-latest/ (Taiwan)

I've tried the mirrors as well and I'm not the only one: no dice!
So, just be patient. We'll live a few days more with UP3...

that's one of the problems of mintupdate (and i only realise that a few days ago) it prompts to install and upgrade even if the update process had errors refreshing the repos (something that apt doesn't).
right now you can't really tell if it's safe to reboot or not, it depends of the pkgs that were updated, the ones that were left behind, in what situation exactly is your upgrade process. it can be safe or not.

the best approach is always to upgrade only when you have a clean update.

if you are updating through mintupdate don't hit the "install updates" button if before you saw any error fetching the repo info

I have spent some time today trying to update! Trying to be polite.
MInt update freezes the system it does not install the new mint update
Update through terminal cant find what it needs and rightly gives up
With mint install I had to twice or more restart to get away from the frozen system, not funny but more amusing that windoze taking over you life :-)
I will try again in a few days when things have calmed
What I don't need is a trashed system as mint 12 for me has as yet been unusable it can do nothing without crashing
Just as well I use MDLE as my full time O S and have used Mint as my one and only OS for some time now
I run a business from it
If you fail me now I am ruined No Joke.

Is your LMDE running well with UP3 ?
I guess the answer is yes, so why are you trying to upgrade and being thinking about the fact that something may go wrong ? Just stay with up3.

Frankly I don't care about your last comment. You just do your own choices, and maybe upgrading to UP4 will ruin you. And so what ? You could have been staying in UP3...

Running "testing" isn't the best business decision as well I presume.

He is right. Your running LMDE who is based on Debian Testing... Things may go wrong, but you knew it when you choose LMDE. That was the game...

Seriously: I would first use the terminal and try
sudo apt-get -d dist-upgrade
which will first download the packages. This way you will get less error messages. If it succeeds then you can leave the -d option away.

Okay! Will try sudo apt-get -d dist-upgrade
I asume that it's okay to cancel the present download and that the files will be still stored locally.

Myself,
500 Internal Server Error
take a break :) there's nothing you can do now, you can't reach the server at this point and it's not your fault. Clem is working on it.

I have been letting it do the download while I do some other things.
Thanks for the update and advice.

Once I do have all the *.deb files I want to save them so I can save on downloading most of them again as I need to do a second LMDE xfce 64bit update later.
Where are the files stored so I can copy and save them before using Bleachbit?
I have tried searching but still have not found them.
