LMDE KDE UP4

Postby Lugh on Tue Apr 10, 2012 6:13 pm

I successfully updated both our computers. Mine already had LMDE UP3 that I recent installed KDE 4.6.5. The upgrade went fairly smoothly, but crashed once in the middle. I restarted MintUpdate and it went completely through the second time. Everything is running just beautifully. It appeared to install Gnome 3.2 as well as KDE 4.7.4. I suppose I had some Gnome dependencies that required it. I saw Gnome 3.2 show up in the list as it was installing, but I can't really see any evidence of Gnome Shell anywhere - as I shouldn't.

Oddly enough, LMDE Xfce on my wife's laptop upgraded UP4 the same way. It crashed the first upgrade try and succeeded the second one. I'm not sure there there is some weirdness in the install of UP4 that cause both of these, but thought I would report it anyway.

Thanks,
Clyde

hi Clyde,
first of all i'm glad that the upgrade was (kinda  ) painless and successful, with all the server issues that we are still seeing that is saying something.
the gnome3.2 deps are most certainly due to some gnome apps you still have installed (nautilus probably, network-manager-gnome that pulls in gnome-keyring that pulls in bla bla bla...you see the story  ) it's very hard (and you gonna break the system) to purge all the gnome deps from the system.

enjoy

I did wait a few days before I upgraded. Sometimes it's not good to be the first and the blog made that pretty clear.

Besides I wanted to remove a few more Gnome apps before doing the upgrade. Based on your advice, zerozero, I didn't try to remove fundamental features of Gnome. I just removed apps. The advantage to getting a "background" Gnome upgrade is that the few Gnome apps that I do have run very nicely. I don't get the bad "look" that a lot of KDE user complain about when using Gnome apps. So, up front I have KDE - which I like - but have the flexibility to run Gnome apps if I need to.

Thanks for your guidance pre-upgrade.
