[SOLVED] Firefox doesn't show some text after UP4

Postby egabrum on Wed Apr 11, 2012 3:06 am

After UP4, Firefox / Iceweasel / Iceape are acting very weird. I have tried complete removal, re-installing, removing .mozilla, disabling add-ons, diabling plugins, etc
I am out of ideas.

Behaviour: for example
[*] in http://www.linuxmint.com/ Firefox shows the blog items but not the headers/titles.
[*] If I search linuxmint in Google, the first search item shows
Main Page -
.com/

instead of
Main Page - Linux Mint
linuxmint.com/

[*] http://www.nytimes.com/ does not show the sections on the left (World / U.S. / Politics / ...)

etc
Chome and Opera seem to work fine.

Is this a theme problem? Can you see what misses if you Ctrl+A or Firfox - Edit - Select All?

No. Even doing Ctrl+A the same parts remain hidden.
If I do: Select -> Right click -> View selection source, everything is there in the source code, but Firefox does not render some parts.

For example, in linuxmint.com , although Firefox's source viewer recognizes:

Code: Select all
<div class="article"><h1>Linux Mint Debian 201204 RC (MATE/Cinnamon &amp; Xfce) released!</h1><p class="timestamp">This article was posted on: Wed, 11 Apr 2012 17:06:08 +0000</p><p>The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 201204 RC with updated ISOs for

In fact, Firefox only displays:

This article was posted on: Wed, 11 Apr 2012 17:06:08 +0000
The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 201204 RC with updated ISOs for

in this case, as you can see, the header is missing. But I think it's not only headers; in other pages much more text is missing.

Could you post a screenshot?

Maybe you even have to reinstall dependencies, some libraries ...

See captures attached.

Also, I have noticed that Java packages are outdated (6.26.1) and Synaptic doesn't allow me to Mark them for Reinstallation.

That's http://www.linuxmint.com, right? There's more going on: I don't have the search but an image wrapper (javascript). Opera looks the same though I have some plugins in both.
Do you have an extra blocker, firewall etc. installed?
Also, I have noticed that Java packages are outdated (6.26.1) and Synaptic doesn't allow me to Mark them for Reinstallation.

I have 6.26-1
Regard the minus. But I don't think they are outdated. For Linux. ;)
You could try to reinstall Sun's Java:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall sun-java-jre

Or OpenJDK:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall openjdk-6-jre

[*] I took my screen shots from http://www.linuxmint.com/start/debian/
I don't have any blocker installed.

I have 6.26-1
Regard the minus. But I don't think they are outdated. For Linux.

[*] Latest version for Linux is 6.31 http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp
I wonder why the updated don't make it to the package distributions.

[*] If I try: sudo apt-get install --reinstall sun-java-jre
I get:
Code: Select all
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Reinstallation of sun-java6-jre is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

If I may digress... I am very confused, I must admit. I spend much more time working on getting my OS in order than getting work done with my computer. It's like if a tennis player spent more time tuning his racket than playing...

Than it looks as mine.

Get the sources and compile it yourself if you're not happy. ;)

Duh, I meant this package.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall sun-java6-jre

Bad choice of words. Because the racket is the hardware. It's like a drummer spending more time with the setup than drumming. ;)

I think I had an idea but it's 6AM so I go to bed. :D

Thanks zerozero. I have Java 6.31 installed now. Any idea why it is not updated anymore by the repositories?

Anyhow, this does not solve the problem with Firefox. I have spent hours looking for information. Read tens of pages and threads and nobody seems to have the same problem (really?..). All I know it that UP4 triggered this problem (along with some others).

Did you sleep well? Fine... what was that idea? :D

If found out that the line triggering the problem in (for example) http://www.linuxmint.com/start/debian/ is:
Code: Select all

Quite. Thanks. ;) But I forgot. :D I guess it had something to do with addons and settings but since you even tried a new profile ...
You could try to install another version in /opt ...? :|

How did you find that out? The only line is can find with start.css is enclosed like this:

Finally!!! What a frustrating and useless waste of time...

SOLUTION
Install the package ttf-mscorefonts-installer

I ignore if I had it installed before UP4 and, if so, why it was uninstalled after UP4. I hate when the updates become regressions.

Many thanks äxl. Your remarks led me to figure what the problem was.

Firefox works again and you presented the solution. I at least wouldn't call it "useless". ;)

You're welcome. However you came to the solution ...
