init: timeout opening/writing control channel /run/initctl

Postby pattonia on Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:44 am

I am having trouble rebooting my system. I was upgrading my Linux Mint Xfce to service pack 4, when I ran out of disk space on my root partition, leaving me with an incomplete install. I have access to the desktop and applications, but I cannot shutdown to boot from an ISO DVD to resize my partition and free up disk space. Any attempt to reboot results in a logout. When I attempt a full shutdown from the command line, I get this error:

Code: Select all
sudo shutdown now
Broadcast message from root@arctic-gis1 (pts/0) (Thu Apr 12 10:33:47 2012):
The system is going down to maintenance mode NOW!
shutdown: timeout opening/writing control channel /run/initctl
init: timeout opening/writing control channel /run/initctl

I'm not sure what packages are affected to cause this error, or what I may have to reinstall. Any ideas on how to solve this??

A quick search mentions that this could be a one time thing.

They talk about fixing this after version 2.88dsf-19
2.88dsf-22 comes with UP4 and I have no problem.

First you should do a backup.
Have you tried
Code: Select all
halt
or
Code: Select all
init 0
to shutdown and
Code: Select all
reboot
or
Code: Select all
init 6

Thanks for the hints. I tried halt, init 6, init 0, reboot and they all give the same error.

I have managed to free some disk space on / , so I should be able to remove and re-install packages, if that helps.

Complete install is of course to favour before you hard start.

I only then would try the commands a last time with the -f (force) option.

I think I may have a little more information to shed light on my problem...I was updating mintsystem using mintupdate, and I received the following error when the updates were being applied:

Does anyone have any idea how to go about fixing this problem?

There's something very wrong with your services.

I only have K12halt in /etc/rc0.d/. It's last in that folder. Do you also have 'halt' in that folder?
sysvinit, sysvinit-utils and sysv-rc were updated with UP4. Could you reinstall these please and if asked take the maintainer's version.

mintsystem shouldn't be the problem. It's only triggering update.rc-d thus it's showing the errors.

I checked my halt, and it was set to a symlink to /bin/true; weird, I have no idea why that was. I replaced it with a true script version of halt, and that seems to have fixed my problems.

Thanks for help anyway,
