Update Manager wants to remove a ton of packages

Postby 100filloas on Sat May 12, 2012 6:18 pm

Somewhat foolishly perhaps for a newbie I'm running LMDE, and on top of that this is my current sources list:

A recent update has led to some strange intermittant problems with Epiphany and various other programs that use windows (buttons and scroll bars disappearing etc) and I was thinking the simple cure might be simply another update (136MB of updates are available). The problem is that Update Manager wants to remove 145 packages, including Epiphany, VLC, Audacious, Brasero, Deluge and Unetbootin among others.

Obviously I can avoid removing so many useful packages by simply not installing the updates (which include a new kernel) but it strikes me as very odd that so many packages are to be dumped. Is this normal? I think I'm missing something important here, can anyone fill me in?

Many thanks!

1- how are you updating the system? apt? aptitude? upgrade? dist-upgrade/full-upgrade? synaptic? mintupdate?
2- what is the content of /etc/apt/preferences?

1. I'm updating with the Update Manager (there's a button on the desktop labelled 'mintUpdate.py').

2. /etc/apt/preferences looks like this:

Package: *
Pin: release o=linuxmint
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: origin packages.linuxmint.com
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian
Pin-Priority: 500

just a couple ideas:
1- you are running lmde for some time now? or changed the repos to testing? either way tracking directly testing repos has its :oops: sometimes, you can here viewtopic.php?f=198&t=67502 :)

2 - suggestion: try to put all the values on the preferences file to 500,close, save and run (in the terminal)
Code: Select all
apt update && apt dist-upgrade
(don't answer "y", post back the output here in the forum >> use the code tags please :wink: )

Comment the Ubuntu repo.

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

What version of shutter is in the PPA?

$ apt-cache policy shutter
shutter:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 0.88.1-1
Version table:
0.88.1-1 0
500 http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable/main i386 Packages

If you must have the shiniest new version of Shutter, do not use a repo made for Ubuntu. Instead build it from source.

@ zerozero your suggestion of putting all the values on the preference file to 500 seems to have done the trick. Now when I start the update process using

Code: Select all
apt update && dist-upgrade

I get:

I've been using LMDE since about the release date, although I switched the repos only relatively recently. On the one hand I know it's not recommended for beginners, on the other if you never make mistakes or encounter problems you don't learn much either thus retain your newbie status indefinitely.

@ craig, that's a very good point thanks. I'm sure there was a reason why I did it that way to begin with but not necessarily one that makes a lot of sense!

i would say that it's safe to go with that output, see here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 80#p578392 (it's similar);
as for ppa's and lmde, craig has a good point.
