changing fonts in the menu settings

Postby telenux on Mon May 14, 2012 10:46 am

I am recommending LMDE (latest) to someone but I anticipate that the fonts will be too small. They'll install it to a laptop so how do you change the font size in the Menu?

I notice that the fonts are small in either the Cinnamon or MATE desktop so how do you make them bigger?

They're probably ok for me at default but I think for some ppl, they might want it bigger especially if you install to a notebook with a screen smaller than 17".

Can anyone provide instructions? I tried 'Appearance: customize the look of the desktop' but it didn't change any font size in the menu.

Edit: I was trying this using live media so does one have to reboot or something? I don't see why the font size doesn't change when you manually change it in the settings.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The 'Ubuntu version' of Mint has a stylesheet.css file one can edit which allows one to change a font (supposedly, a menu font). Is that the equivalent?

I'm not sure where it is in the Debian LMDE version though because what I found is for gnome-shell edition.

Can anyone help?

Easy.
Go to Menu>Preferences>Appearance>Fonts.
or just type "Appearance" in the Menu search field.

The font size is set in the file /usr/share/themes/Mint-X-Metal/gtk-2.0/gtkrc . If you use default theme.
Two lines:
...
font_name = "9"
...
font_name = "8"
...

I have done so:
#font_name = "9"
font_name = "9"

You can try in the terminal window: sudo pluma /usr/share/themes/Mint-X-Metal/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
And you can set the font size as you want.
