Linux Mint RandomlyFreezes

Postby LinuxMint123 on Sat May 26, 2012 12:54 pm

Hello:

I've experienced Linux Mint Debian (LMDE - latest version - 32bit) to freeze randomly. It can happen any time, during boot-up, web searching, playing music, checking email, chatting, etc... The machine is unresponsive, the mouse is the only device that works during the 3~5min freeze. Then the machine goes back to working as expected. I've installed LMDE-32bit via CD, USB on different machines, with different hardware and experience the same unresponsiveness over time.

Pleas keep in mind this happened immediately after a vanilla install. So, I did not go out and start randomly installing software from on unknown repositories.

If others have experienced the same scenario, have you found a way to resolve it. I've been searching the web and have not found a resolution?

I've included my hardware from my test net-book below.

One medicine is to remove apt-xapian-index package completely ..

Ok...I did some research before I removed 'apt-xapian-index'. After further analysis, it appeared to be safe to remove, so I did. The machine appeared to be working just fine...then it the machine freezes for about 3~5min.

Any other suggestions?

Using Linux Mint (Maya/Mate) here and have similar issues several times per day; screen freezes, all keyboard input fails and mouse still moves but has no effect -- requires hard reboot. Mostly occurrs when using Firefox, though may be unrelated.

System Info:
Linux Mint Maya 64bit (Mate)
Asus Laptop K53E (Intel i5)
$ apt-get remove completely-unnecessary-application
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
*
After this operation, all disk space will be freed.

I believe I have found the issue. Possible bad hard drive. After reviewing the log file from the recent "freeze" this is what has been captured. If anyone can confirm this, please do so.

With nearly three thousand views for this topic, I think a "bad" hard-drive is as likely a culprit as Bill Gates. See also: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=103054&start=120 -- This is a pervasive bug.

esteban1uy has been helping to diagnose the problems from users of the main edition, on the topic Penurious Penguin is linking to. Latest update is:
esteban1uy wrote:So, as some other user pointed, there are multiple causes to the freeze. Two of them are pretty clear:
1) Java messing with LibreOffice, Jdownloader and Firefox.
2) Hybrid graphics systems using the weaker card instead of the stronger.

And now we have two ways to diagnose the problem:
1) Disable Java (if no freezes, that's it)
2) Force software rendering (if no freezes, even if it looks too glitchy, then you have graphics hardware problems).

You can force software rendering for Cinnamon by running the following command. This works on the main edition, but I think this will work on LMDE as well. Software rendering is not yet ready for daily use, but you can use it to analyse your problem further. As detailed on the linked topic, users with certain graphics cards are having issues with Cinnamon, which is being caused by buggy graphics card drivers.
Code: Select all
bash -c "LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 cinnamon --replace &"
