Could anyone tell me why this is OK in terminal:
gksu /home/alistair/Programs/areca/areca.sh //as superuser
but as menu item same command comes up without su rights?

Any suggestions how to fix LMDE/Mate

gksu is for graphical apps, and you try execute a shell app (.sh), change the gksu for su or su -c.
