[solved, installing udisks-glue seems to be enough for mate/gnome shell - see http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=198&t=147101 ]
Hello
This must be very simple to solve, but I'm stumped.
Ever since I installed LMDE (coming from ubuntu) on my desktop computer, disks inserted into a DVD reader (both internal and usb) fail to be detected, and will not mount even if I click on the drive icon within "Computer". I've tried both Caja (Mate desktop) and Nautilus (Gnome Shell), same thing. If I then run gparted (or refresh drives from within gparted), I get the standard pop up message for new media and can then mount and access the disk.
Any ideas?
I've no idea what logs or other data to append, sorry.
Running 32bit LMDE Mate edition, Update pack 7
Thanks!

Edited the OP.
Hopefully won't need to downgrade gvfs as per http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=198&t=146187#p770495
