[SOLVED] Jetty fails to start - I do not want it to start

Post by -RF- »

Hello,

I have a kinda cosmetic problem here. I recently disabled the plymouth splash so I can see what my Mint does when booting (Oh, I love scrolling lines...). Now I see that ugly line (cited from memory)
[fail] Can't start jetty. Set NO_START to 1 or uncomment it
So the obvious solution would be to do what the line says - enabling jetty to start. But I do not need jetty, I do not want it, so I thought a simple aptitude remove jetty would do it - but it does not. So here I am, no jetty installed, but still getting an error at booting.

Now, I have no idea where to look for scripts that start this thing, and I do not know which files to paste here so you can help me with this :-(
However, I already saw some scripts in /etc/rcX.d, but I do not want to touch anything there without knowing what I do.

My system:
LMDE 64bit MATE, Update pack 8. Problem occurred with also with pack 7.
My other abilities:
I can use the shell, installed the system with encryption, so I am not a complete noob :-)

Regards,
-RF-

Solution
"aptitude remove jetty" did not remove the package "jetty{p}". With "aptitude purge jetty" everything was removed and the fail disappeared.

Try
$ cd /
$ sudo find -iname "*jett*"
see if you find a jetty.desktop file (in an 'autostart' directory) or some file in /etc/init.d/.

Hi,

thanks for your answer. So I run the given command, and this is the (cleaned from definitly innocent files) output:

What I read from this, there are files in the rcX.d dirs, and a jetty file in /etc/init.d/jetty. There is no jetty.desktop file.
If I had to guess I would say removing the jetty file in /etc/init.d/ solves my problem?

It sure looks like you have jetty installed - I have zero files named *jett* ('cept Joan Jett mp3s...). (Mint16 Xfce)

Another thing to check: somewhere in the OS menus there should be something called "start-up programs" or some such; try disabling it there first.

If you want to uninstall it, try
$ sudo apt-get purge jetty
If it says not installed (something funny going on), personally I'd install it and then purge it.

Then see if you still have these files:
/etc/rc2.d/S17jetty
/etc/init.d/jetty
/etc/rc4.d/S17jetty

If they're still there, I'd rename them (e.g. originalname.save or some such), reboot and see what happens. Purging it should remove them, tho I dunno if jetty is required for LMDE. (?)

More info on /etc/rcX.d here:

Hi,

I had jetty installed, but it was defintly not vie "aptitude install jetty", but probably via "aptitude install $some_development_tool_that_recommended_jetty --with-recommends" . "aptitute purge jetty" showed me that the package jetty{p} was installed, this one was not removed when I used "aptitude remove jetty". Interesting... Before, I checked the "start-up programs", but it was not there.

However - this solved the problem and there is no [fail] could not start jetty anymore. The system runs fine, starts, everything I use the system for still works, THANKS! Now I do not have to be ashamed when the system boots in front of my fellows...

P.S.: I added the solution to the first post.
