I just installed lmde and I know that it is about to change to stable base from testing.
I am running a newly updated lmde as I stated above. Does this mean that when Debian 8 is released and it goes stable that for an lmde user who is already running jessie that things continue just as they are? Just security updates after that? Or, do we have to do a fresh lmde install after Jessie becomes stable?
Thanks for clarifying.
future of lmde?

Re: future of lmde?
LMDE 2 uses different repositories than LMDE 1; both for the Debian packages and for the Linux Mint packages. If you are editing those repositories on your LMDE 1 install, probably you won't be able to use any option for automatic upgrading from LMDE 1 to LMDE 2 once LMDE 2 is released. You can probably upgrade in place by editing your repositories manually. There are already people upgrading from LMDE 1 to LMDE 2 development that way.
Re: future of lmde?
Xenopeek, thanks for the reply.
Here is my repo list which I assuming is for LMDE 1 because it's a download off the main site from yesterday...
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
deb http://extra.linuxmint.com debian main
Can you explain or provide a link on how to upgrade from LMDE 1 to LMDE 2?
Thanks.

Re: future of lmde?
See this topic: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=183280. I wouldn't do that on your main install; it's likely you'll run into problems. Better to wait for the release.

First half of 2015; when it's ready.
Re: future of lmde?
so i upgraded to lmde 2 by following the instructions on the thread started by reference2myself...,
i had a machine that i could afford for something to break and re-install lmde 1 if i had to.
the upgrade worked absolutely perfect with the only issue being using the linux mint & cinnamon themes. when i used the 2 dark themes i would get a white rectangle when i clicked the word menu in the left hand corner. i had to change to mint-x theme which solved the problem. if anyone has a fix for the dark menu problem please share.
one quick question now that i have done the upgrade to lmde 2...
when the final lmde 2 gets released i am already running it i believe. so, i would imagine that as long as i maintain updates i'll be fine and won't need to do a fresh install? is that accurate?
then, the lmde 3 upgrade will be my next upgrade 2 to 3 years away when the next stable is released? am i correct?
thanks again.

Re: future of lmde?
That's likely the case. As LMDE 2 will be released also it will be shared how to upgrade from LMDE 1; which might be just the steps you did, or might be something additional is needed. If that is the case you can amend that thenjoemartin wrote:when the final lmde 2 gets released i am already running it i believe. so, i would imagine that as long as i maintain updates i'll be fine and won't need to do a fresh install? is that accurate?
Probably, yes. There might be a release in between with new Cinnamon, MATE, and Mint tools versions. Just as is done with the main edition (e.g., release 17.1 which has the same package base as release 17 but newer versions of Cinnamon, MATE, and Mint tools).joemartin wrote:then, the lmde 3 upgrade will be my next upgrade 2 to 3 years away when the next stable is released? am i correct?
