well you could try grabbing the ubuntu packages and presumably quite a lot of dependencies from the ubuntu repos and installing it manually. But a. it's questionable whether this will work and b. quite frankly I doubt it's worth the effort - just use dropbox :D

yeah, i was afraid of that ;)

so i guess those with a paid U1 account, should stick to Mint based on Ubuntu then...

Another option in Debian is Spideroak. https://spideroak.com/

Now, if you wanted to try installing Ubuntu One on LMDE, I would like to hear about your experience.

So I decided to try U1 on LMDE just to see if it where possible. After studying dependencies of different versions of the ubuntuone-client package as described on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntuone-client I think going for the Lucid version was the safest bet. So here goes:

Download/open and install these packages with GDebi in this order:

1. python-ubuntuone-storageprotocol_1.2.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/py ... l/download
(5 more packages will be auto-installed)

2. python-ubuntuone-client_1.2.2-0ubuntu2_all.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-update ... t/download
(2 more packages will be auto-installed)

3. python-configglue_0.2dev-0ubuntu2_all.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/py ... e/download

4. python-problem-report_1.13.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/py ... t/download

5. python-apport_1.13.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/py ... t/download
(4 more packages will be auto-installed)

6. ubuntuone-client_1.2.2-0ubuntu2_all.deb
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-update ... t/download

So far, so good... Now for some testing :)

Will report results ASAP.

Continued:

Installing thise did not get me any menu entry so I looked in the Auto-start Applications and found a new entry:
Ubuntu One
/bin/sh -c '[ -d "$HOME/Ubuntu One" ] && ubuntuone-launch'

After executing the command
Code: Select all
/bin/sh -c '[ -d "$HOME/Ubuntu One" ] && ubuntuone-launch'
in a terminal, nothing happens.

Opening my Ubuntu One folder (from previous Ubuntu install) with the Nautilus file browser, I do not see any synced files nor do I get the usual Nautilus integration U1 banner.

I must be missing something more... Might that be libubuntuone ? It's not available on http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/libubuntuone-1.0-1 ;(

Continued 2:

I found more packages:

libedataserver1.2-11
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/libedataserver1.2-11

libnautilus-extension1
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/libnautilus-extension1
(overwriting older version from debian repo)

ubuntuone-client-gnome 1.2.2
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-update ... ient-gnome

libubuntuone-1.0-1
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/libubuntuone-1.0-1

libubuntuone1.0-cil
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/libubuntuone1.0-cil

libido-0.1-0
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-updates/libido-0.1-0

indicator-me
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/indicator-me
(7 more packages are auto-installed)

Now after adding Indicator Applet Session applet to the gnome panel (replacing the Switch User applet) and a reboot, I find I can connect my PC to my Ubuntu One account. But... actual file sharing/upload does not take place...

Giving up but I feel I failed with the finish in site ;(

I must commend you for your tenacity. I'd have given up at the first hurdle  I wonder, though, whether if you had got it working as it should, would all the effort have been worth it?

not so cynical! ;) ... i've got some backups stored on U1 so it would have been nice to see it working. besides, is the challenge alone not enough?

ah well, downloading the backups manually is possible too and with a dropbox account i'm back in business.

Not wanting to give up just yet, I installed some more packages:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install desktopcouch

(installs more packages like couchdb)

python-ubuntuone
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/python-ubuntuone

ubuntuone-client-tools
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-update ... ient-tools

python-nautilus
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/python-nautilus

After this, there is definitely syncing going on. I can connect my PC to my U1 account and I see network traffic going on. Services like ubuntuone-launch, ubuntuone-login, couchdb and desktopcouch-service are active.

But... Nautilus does not show any files being processed or having been synced. It only shows files are 'out of sync' with a small cloud and red crossed button icon... Not the comforting cloud and green v-mark or double-arrows icons :(

I could be wrong but feel like only this integration with Nautilus is still failing. What could be missing still ?

I think this is still highly relevant.

Ubuntu One was dubbed Intent to Package (ITP) over three years ago and there is still no party to be held.

Any more recent experiences with getting U1 running than the 2011 ones in this topic?

You could always try building it from source.... There ought to be a single source package somewhere...

I was actually looking at doing this...

It's not as easy as you may think, there are a bunch of dependencies that have dependencies themselves.
But I applaud any effort you make.
