Multiple failures when trying to update some repositories

Postby psych1610 on Wed Jan 26, 2011 11:20 pm

I posted this in a previous thread of mine but I'm not sure many people saw it, so I thought I would try it here and edit it out of there.

Can anyone pinpoint the cause of the failures in the screen shot? I see these all the time while upgrading since the beginning of the installation. Is a repository down or is this par for the course.

All the ones that are failing end with 'translation-En' or 'translation-En_US'. I can only assume that these have to do with translations or the like. I've attempted to use a mirror selected from software sources to see if it was just the main server having this issue but to no avail. Unfortunately google didn't lend a helping hand

It looks like I'm running into this bug, except for debian.https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/243906 Note that if I run apt-get update in a terminal it all seems to work, or at least it does not report failures.

Your bug link came up "error page not found" But I think with Debian it is best to run apt update and apt dist-upgrade via the terminal for that reason. I read on another post that the update manager wasn't fully functional in Mint Debian yet because it is still the Main edition version based on Ubuntu. That is old news and it could have been fixed but I use the terminal and it never fails me...yet. Also you can use smxi (smxi.org) for updates. I haven't used the update manager for a long time just because it always gives the failure messages. I do not remember if they were the same ones though. I personally have experienced faster and more reliable updates when I update outside the X desktop via ctrl+alt+F1. You can search "Updates in Mint Debian" in these forums and you might come across the LMDE update approved methods somewhere. Hope this was somewhat helpful.

I'm not sure of the fix, but I use Update Manager, and have yet to run into any issue.

Please verify your sources since I cannot duplicate your error.

Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

You may want to copy and paste the above sources since errors can be made by keying in everything by hand. The above are my sources, and they work.

Thanks, I fixed the bug link. Not sure why it was all out of whack. I agree it's nice to update and dist-upgrade or plain upgrade through the terminal but that allows "unsafe" upgrades through like kernels and X server upgrades which is undesirable for some. I also read that the update manager wasn't fully functional or configured to deal with Debian rolling releases.. I'll check out smxi.org looks useful. I'll bookmark it and check it out!

Dave

I'm not sure if this is just a "my system" kind of thing or otherwise but I've set up a testing system in virtual box and see the same thing. Your comment leads me to believe it's just me, but I haven't changed anything.

My sources.list:

Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
# deb http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/ unstable main
# deb http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/ experimental main

As you can see Hadret's repository is in there but commented out. Nothing has been updated from there to start with and the failures still occur with them commented out. That should mean that the failures are occurring in the listed repositories and shouldn't have anything to do with those. As I mentioned before I'm experiencing them in a test system also and they only deal with ones that end in "translation". Is it that my system is trying to grab english translations and there just isn't anything to grab? Do you see the update manager trying to get those failed ones or do you just not see them at all. Are you using English as a system language?

I just ran update manager again and took a few more screenshots at different steps in the process. Apparently the translation lines are not the only ones failing. I also see failures in updates for Mint Debians amd64 packages. Links below:

http://img819.imageshack.us/i/screenshot1ajd.png/
http://img291.imageshack.us/i/screenshot2nv.png/

Based on these images I can only successfully contact Debians servers and not Mints. Is there a failure somewhere?

I just tried this in virtual box with an i386 iso and saw the same kinds of things.

Really hope we can figure this out!

*Edit* I took a nap and came back to this. Now I'm even more confused than ever. In Mints case, some of the ones that "failed" are then repeated right after words and are marked as "hit". Matter of fact, this looks like it happens for all of the ones with the Mint repositories.

Still not sure why the translation ones fail. Perhaps just no updates and fail is synonymous with ignore?
