How to install more recent packages? [kind of solved]

Post by macias »

Hello,

I am running LMDE converted from Debian Squeeze RC2.

My problem is that software which was installed during installation is pretty much up to date (i.e. I cannot complain). But no matter what I install by myself is dead old -- FireFox from LM repositories: 2009, Konqueror: 2008, F-Spot: 2009. And so on and on.

So, my question is -- how to install more recent packages, I don:t require bleeding-edge-tomorrow-release, but at least 2010, and not for sure releases from 2008.

My sources list:

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.icm.edu.pl/pub/Linux/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ testing main non-free
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
and preferences

Code: Select all

Package: *
Pin: release o=linuxmint
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: origin packages.linuxmint.com
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 500
After editing both files, I executed "apt-get update".

Thank you. For my understanding, since I want to stick to testing branch (as LMDE), it seems my list is OK. I simply use mirror for the main Debian repo.

the reason why Debain is so stable, is because they stcik with more older programs, they have less problems

so sometimes it is a good thing not to have the latest software

I just found it:

Code: Select all

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
So, it looks like konqueror from 2008 year is for real, even in most "bleeding edge" branch (it is new definition of bleeding edge then).

On one hand, sure, it is good to use reliable software, but on the second hand, 3 years of development goes nowhere really (i.e. konqueror from 2008 is no more reliable than version from 2011).

Hmm...

Strange this is with Iceweasel, it is from 2010, but Firefox itself is from 2009.

With a standard install LMDE, if you wait a couple of weeks, you should see some new packages rolling in.
Current hardware: a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
Current OS: LMDE 3

Ok, thank you. I hope my converted Debian looks like LMDE so I will get proper updates :-)

I am "a bit" surprised about 2008-2009 software, that's all :-)
