How to get sound over hdmi?

Does anyone know how to get sound over hdmi working in lmde with nVidia GT218 [ION] driver 260.19.29? I've messed around with the sound preferences with no improvement. I figure I must be missing a configuration file?

I use my HDMI all the time to output to my tv. My card however is an ATI 2600 HD. All i had to do was install the official closed source drivers and then select the audio from "analog stereo" to "hdmi" output in the pulse audio volume manager ...
