Two small questions about Mintupdate

Post by Imagus »

Two questions about Mintupdate:

1. When I click Edit > Preferences > Update Method I see "google.com" next to "Internet check (domain name or IP address)". What's google doing there? I absolutely hate everything google-ish and want it out of there. Can I just remove it or do I have to enter something else?

2. Now that Ikey Doherty is in the news :) , I might as well ask what he's warning me about in my mintupdate:

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.ikey-doherty.com/dists/ ... elease.gpg Could not resolve 'packages.ikey-doherty.com'
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.ikey-doherty.com/dists/ ... ion-en.bz2 Could not resolve 'packages.ikey-doherty.com'
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.ikey-doherty.com/dists/ ... -en_US.bz2 Could not resolve 'packages.ikey-doherty.com'
W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

There's also a few warnings about Opera and Virtualbox:

W: GPG error: http://deb.opera.com stable Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY A2019EA84E7532C8
W: GPG error: http://download.virtualbox.org squeeze Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 54422A4B98AB5139

Fortunately they're just warnings and not errors, so I guess it's no big deal. But still it would be nice not to see them at all. Is there any way to suppress these warnings so that they never appear again?

Thank you.

1. That's just the site mintupdate uses to determine (maybe ping) if internet connection is available to update its package list. You can insert any other website or host there

2.
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.ikey-doherty.com/dists/ ... elease.gpg Could not resolve 'packages.ikey-doherty.com'
DNS resolution of the domain fails, so it can't download a package list

The GPG error means, that mintuptate/apt has no public key for the repos to check if the package list is signed correctly. Opera changed the PGP singning key for their repo some weeks ago. For Virtualbox it should be similar. You just have to import the new one. Have look at http://deb.opera.com and http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads for instructions

Thank you, that solved the errors in mintupdate.

As for the google.com in mintupdate, I'm not sure that's the reason. What has Google have to do with updates for Mint? Anyway, I have changed the address just to make sure.

UPDATE: I managed to get rid of the Ikey Doherty errors by removing the following line from my etc/apt/sources.list:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.ikey-doherty.com/ debian main
I have no idea what it was doing there in the first place. :?:

Anyway, maybe this will help some others with the same problem too.

Have a nice day.

lol you got rid of me? :P
Nooo, just the errors caused by you! :D
Ikey wrote:The only way you had my repo was by adding it manually. No doubt that was for Emerald.
As I've already told people my repo is no longer up, sorry.
No problem. I have indeed installed Emerald and so I probably copied & pasted the line from somewhere, I really don't remember.
Anyway, thank you for explaining.
