Auto Log In Question...

When i installed LMDE, i had it set it up for manual log in (in fact, that is how i have done all my linux system set ups)...Although i use a laptop, it is always used as a desktop, so there aren't any security issues...I was thinking about switching to auto log in..

1) How do you switch over to it auto log in? and 2) If i do it, will the system be challenging me with any kind of security questions or require me to set up any kind of security "chain" password or anything of that nature? 3) If i should decide to switch back to manual log in, how would you do that?

To auto log in, go to Menu=>Administration=>Login Screen. Click onto make changes" and enter your password. "Log in as (your user name) automatically". Click on your name to confirm this is the account to be opened on boot and click close. You will now be automatically logged in at each boot. No special passwords, no challenges.

To reverse it, open the Login Screen Settings and click on "Show the screen for choosing who will log in."

Just a quick follow up...while it works fine (as far as the automatic log in) after changes the settings, the only drawback is that when i open my Evolution Mail program, it will ask for my password which it does not do when i manually log in the system...

Manual log in takes care of things like logging into Evolution, opening the Gnome keyring if needed to connect to a network, and other housekeeping type log ins. If you use automatic log in, you must do all these things as the apps are called or find a workaround.

I have never used Evolution so I have no idea how to reset the log in. Sorry I can't help.

That's ok...i do appreciate your help ...yes, i had a feeling that was going to happen if i switched to auto log-in....by manually logging in initially during the boot up process, the system has verified you so it lets you into all programs including mail, with the exception of course of "administrative" functions like Package Manager, Software Center and Update Manager or anything where your system setting will be changed....which is actually a good thing..

But i had a feeling that it would want verification when going into a system installed e-mail program like evolution, thunderbird, etc...which it would not ask for if manually logging in...so, i guess i will stick with manual log in then...
