Help! No Desktop!

Postby Powelly on Thu Mar 17, 2011 3:27 am

So I can boot my computer just fine, but when i login, theres no desktop showing, just the gray screen with the default LMDE background
I was trying to install some plugins for evolution, and i was using synaptic to download some developer stuff for things like gtk+, gconf, libdb and others.
I rebooted and this happened
I can get it to open up nautilus, but then i have no panel, just my desktop, with compiz turned off.
I turned compiz on, and i crashed again, so i uninstalled compiz.
Still not fixed.
Help?

Make sure you're logged out, then press CTRL + ALT + F1 to switch to a tty; login from there, and then type the following command:
Code: Select all
rm -r .gconf

Be aware that this will also delete any custom themes, icon sets, backgrounds, etc. you have, as well as all of Gnome's various configuration settings. Anyways, now press CTRL + ALT + F7 to login graphically, and everything should be fixed.

Well it seemed to remove it, but nothing has changed.
I have uninstalled compiz, anything to do with that?

So, you've deleted your old .gconf folder and now have an entirely new gconf profile, right? Just making sure...

Try the following command:
Code: Select all
gnome-panel &
