Semi mint based stable.. questons..

Post by specmod1 »

I am thinking about installing Debian stable, But Debian has took out all non free drivers, so could i use the Debian mint dvd itsself as a repo? so i can install my wifi drivers?

I have a edimax PCl wifo card not sure what driver to look for? ew-7128g

I also do not want to install everything....... Is it possible to do a custom install? I do not want install open office, and a LOT of other crap, Gimp.. etc I don't even have a printer or blue tooth why would i need them installed?

That means that as long as you haven't updated it yet, just edit /etc/apt/sources.list and change all the references of "testing" to "squeeze"; once you update your system, you'll effectively have a Debian Stable system.

The Iso is 1 gig+, I only have a 6 gig hard drive and a 1 gig sd card,

Mint would have a lot more junk to remove then what would Debian have... There is not easy way to remove it all,

I been trying to build a custom Iso with only 300mb to 400 mb of software just for surfing the web, no gimp, Video programs, Openoffice, and god knows what, tomboy notes, Notepad? some email client that i can't remove? The UGLY themes that are included, Gwibber, Transmission, Xchat, Giver? all the graphics programs, Printing programs, F spot, printer drivers, Java, and all kinds of hidden programs

CUPS = Common Unix Printing System. The description from Synaptic says
The Common UNIX Printing System (or CUPS(tm)) is a printing system and
general replacement for lpd and the like. It supports the Internet
Printing Protocol (IPP), and has its own filtering driver model for
handling various document types

Why don't you go for 'Tiny Core Linux'?
Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux GUI Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel...
It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access.

I am going to build it myself using a bare bones stripped down gmone desktop, And using that liquidize x kernel or what ever its called, is there any place where i can upload the iso so people can down load it?

May use compiz window manager if its stable, Faster then what ever gnome is using.. and if its low on weight ( mb) :|

I have 13 hard drives, all but 1 are dead,,, this hard drive is 11 years old.........

It is my understanding that it is "safe" to remove both of those - you're just trading some functionality (sharing folders across a network and easy printing, in the case of those two).
